What is the date of Qingming in 2024? Is Qingming considered as a major public holiday in Vietnam? Thank you! - Mrs. Huyen (Ha Noi)

    • What is the date of Qingming in 2024?

According to a folk culture researcher, Qingming is one of the 24 solar terms. This solar term is scheduled based on the beliefs of Eastern countries.

With the moral principle of remembering one's roots, from ancient times, Qingming has become an important and sacred festival deeply ingrained in the subconscious of many Vietnamese people both in Vietnam and abroad.

Qingming is a spiritually significant event for the Vietnamese people. Qingming day is associated with the ritual of tomb sweeping, to clean and tidy up the ancestral tombs. Therefore, it is also an occasion for people to express gratitude and remember their deceased loved ones.

In a literal sense, "Qing" means clear and "Minh" means bright. Qingming signifies the clear and bright atmosphere. Qingming lasts for about 15-16 days, and the first day is called Qingming festival.

Qingming is closely associated with ethics and the duty of Vietnamese people - the duty of descendants to remember the contributions of their ancestors. It is a day of ancestral commemoration where people have the opportunity to show filial piety and repay the gratitude for the creation and establishment of their ancestral lineage.

Qingming carries the significance of our roots, reminding us not to forget our homeland and ancestors. In many places, people combine Qingming with the Cold Food Festival, which is the day of eating rice cakes and vegetarian food, celebrated on the third day of the third lunar month. However, in reality, Qingming follows the operation rules of the sun - the Gregorian calendar, rather than the moon - the lunar calendar, and usually falls on the 4th or 5th day of the fourth month of the Gregorian calendar.

The customs of cleaning the tombs (tomb sweeping), making repairs, lighting incense, and offering fruits as a mark of respect and remembrance for ancestors are essential activities during this important festival.

The Qingming festival in 2024 will fall on Thursday, April 4th, 2024 in the Gregorian calendar.
