According to the Wan Nian calendar, the 24th of Lunar New Year 2025 is January 23, 2025, in the Gregorian calendar (Thursday). The Lunar New Year is not only a traditional holiday but also an occasion to maintain the culture, customs, and traditional values of the nation.

When do employees in Vietnam begin their 2025 Lunar New Year Holiday?
On November 26, 2024, the Government Office of Vietnam issued Official Dispatch 8726/VPCP-KGVX of 2024 regarding Lunar New Year and other public holidays in 2025:
Considering the proposal of the Ministry of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs in document No. 5152/BLDTBXH-CATLĐ dated October 22, 2024, and document No. 5621/BLDTBXH-CATLĐ dated November 8, 2024, about plans for the Lunar New Year holiday, National Day holiday, and other holidays in 2025, the Prime Minister of the Government of Vietnam, Pham Minh Chinh, gives the following opinions:
- Agree with the proposal of the Ministry of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs in the above documents regarding the Lunar New Year holiday, National Day holiday, and swapping workdays during the April 30th Victory Day and May 1st International Labor Day holiday period of 2025. The Minister of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs is to inform administrative agencies, public service units, political organizations, socio-political organizations, enterprises, and employees as per regulations.
- Agencies and units should arrange staff on duty as per regulations and work appropriately to ensure continuous operation and good service to the organization and the people. Notably, assign officials on duty to handle unexpected tasks that may arise during the Lunar New Year and holiday period as prescribed.
- Ministries, agencies, and localities should have specific and appropriate plans and measures encouraging units, businesses, organizations, and individuals to actively and proactively implement production, business, economy, and social activities, ensuring stability in supply and demand of goods, services, pricing, and markets, contributing to promoting production, business, economic growth, practicing thrift, fighting waste, and striving to successfully achieve the goals and tasks of the 2025 plan, a year marked for acceleration and breakthrough in the 2021-2025 five-year plan, creating a solid foundation for fast and sustainable development in the coming time.

Regarding the 2025 Lunar New Year, employees have the following holidays:
- For officials and public employees: Lunar New Year 2025 holiday starts from January 25, 2025 (equivalent to the 26th of the twelfth lunar month of the Year of the Dragon) until the end of February 2, 2025 (the 5th of the first lunar month of the Year of the Snake), totaling 9 days.
- For employees: employees are entitled to a 5-day Lunar New Year holiday in 2025 according to Labor Code 2019.
However, in 2025, right before the 5-day official holiday are 2 weekend days, Saturday and Sunday on January 25-26, 2025, equivalent to the 26th and 27th of the twelfth lunar month. Following the official holidays are 2 subsequent weekend days, Saturday and Sunday on February 1-2, 2025.
Thus, employees will also have a continuous 9-day Lunar New Year holiday in 2025, starting from Saturday, January 25, 2025, until the end of Sunday, February 2, 2025 (the end of the 5th of the first lunar month of the Year of the Snake).
In addition, the Ministry of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs also encourages businesses to grant a Lunar New Year holiday in 2025 according to the above-mentioned holiday schedule.
When will employees in Vietnam be paid for overtime during holidays?
According to Article 98 of the Labor Code 2019 on overtime wages and nighttime work wages:
Article 98. Overtime wages, nighttime work wages
- Employees who work overtime are paid wages calculated according to the wage unit price or the actual wage paid for the work being performed as follows:
a) On weekdays, at least 150%;
b) On weekly days off, at least 200%;
c) On public holidays, Tet holidays, paid days off, at least 300% excluding wages for public holidays, Tet holidays, and paid days off for employees paid on a daily basis.
- Employees working at night are paid an additional minimum of 30% of the wage calculated according to the wage unit price or actual wage paid for the work of a regular working day.
- employees working overtime at night, in addition to the wage paid as stipulated in clauses 1 and 2 of this Article, are further entitled to an additional 20% of the wage calculated according to the wage unit price or the wage for daytime work of a regular working day or on a weekly day off or a public holiday.
- the Government of Vietnam shall prescribe the detailed implementation of this Article.
According to the above regulation, employees working overtime during holiday periods, including Tet, are paid a wage calculated according to the wage unit price or the actual wage for the work being performed as follows: at least 300% excluding wages for public holidays, Tet holidays, and paid days off for employees paid on a daily basis.
In the case of nighttime work, the employee is additionally paid at least 30% of the wage calculated according to the wage unit price or the actual wage paid for the work of a regular working day.
Employees working overtime at night, besides receiving wages as mentioned above, are also entitled to an additional 20% of the wage calculated according to the wage unit price or the wage for daytime work of a regular working day or on a weekly day off or a public holiday.
