Based on Directive 332-CT in 1992 on the organization of the International Day of Elderly on October 1st annually issued by the Chairman of the Council of Ministers:
According to the decision of the United Nations General Assembly, since 1991, October 1st every year has been called the International Day of Elderly. With this decision, disseminated to all countries around the world, the United Nations wants to express its concern for Elderly, show respect to the elderly who have made tremendous contributions to the development of the human community, and show resolve in caring for the elderly better and better.
On October 1, 1991, Chairman of the State Council Vo Chi Cong made an appeal to the elderly and compatriots nationwide to enthusiastically respond to the above decision of the United Nations General Assembly and stated clearly "Caring for Elderly is a very important and consistent policy of the Communist Party and our State."
In response to the decision of the United Nations and the appeal of the Chairman of our State Council, the Chairman of the Council of Ministers requests sectors, levels, agencies, organizations, depending on their circumstances, to implement the following works on the occasion of the International Day of Elderly on October 1st.

Therefore, on October 1st every year is the International Day of Elderly recognized by the United Nations General Assembly since 1991.
The International Day of Elderly is to express concern for Elderly, show respect to the elderly who have made tremendous contributions to the development of the human community, and show resolve in caring for the elderly better and better.
On October 1, 2024, falls on a Tuesday, the 29th day of the 8th lunar month.

What are activities to promote the role of the elderly in Vietnam?
Based on Article 23 Law on Elderly 2009 stipulating activities to promote the role of Elderly in Vietnam:
- Educating traditional solidarity, patriotism, love for humanity and nature
- Building cultural life; preserving and promoting national cultural identity at the grassroots and community level; participating in movements for promoting learning, talent, supporting education, training, fostering virtuous and talented individuals, and other community campaigns
- Conveying skills, experience, economic, cultural, societal, scientific, technological knowledge, and traditional vocations to younger generations
- Researching, educating, training, applying science and technology; providing professional, technical consultation;
- Developing the economy, reducing poverty, lawful enrichment
- Maintaining political security, social order and safety; mediating conflicts, disputes within the community
- Implementing law on grassroots democracy; practicing thrift to combat wastefulness; preventing and combating corruption, bureaucratism; preventing and combating HIV/AIDS and social evils
- Contributing opinions to policy, law making and participating in monitoring the implementation of policies and laws
- Other social activities for the benefit of the Organization and the people
What are measures of State to promote the role of the elderly in Vietnam?
Based on Article 24 Law on Elderly 2009 stipulating the measures of State to promote the role of the elderly in Vietnam:
Article 24. Responsibilities to promote the role of Elderly
1. The State has the responsibility to take the following measures to enable Elderly to promote their role in accordance with their capabilities:
a) Create conditions for Elderly to express their opinions, aspirations, and recommendations to agencies and organizations on issues of concern to Elderly;
b) Create conditions for Elderly who are scientists, artisans, and other Elderly with special skills and experience, who wish to continue to contribute;
c) Offer credit incentives to Elderly directly involved in production and business to increase income and reduce poverty;
d) Commend and reward Elderly with outstanding achievements.
2. Agencies, the Association of Elderly, other organizations, families, and individuals have the responsibility to create conditions for Elderly to conduct activities promoting the role of Elderly.
Therefore, the state implements the following measures to promote the role of Elderly:
- Creating conditions for Elderly to express opinions, aspirations, recommendations to agencies and organizations on issues of concern to Elderly
- Creating conditions for Elderly who are scientists, artisans, and other Elderly with special skills and experience, who wish to continue to contribute
- Offering credit incentives to Elderly directly involved in production and business to increase income and reduce poverty
- Commending and rewarding Elderly with outstanding achievements
