What are conditions for marriage in Vietnam?
Based on Article 8 of the Marriage and Family Law 2014, the conditions for marriage are stipulated as follows:
Article 8. Conditions for marriage
- A man and a woman wishing to marry each other must meet the following conditions:
a) The man must be at least 20 years old, and the woman at least 18 years old;
b) The marriage is decided voluntarily by both the man and the woman;
c) Neither party is deprived of civil act capacity;
d) The marriage does not fall under any of the prohibited marriage cases stipulated in points a, b, c, and d of clause 2, Article 5 of this Law.
- The State does not recognize marriage between people of the same sex.
The conditions for marriage are stipulated as follows:
[1] The man must be at least 20 years old, and the woman must be at least 18 years old.
[2] The marriage is decided voluntarily by both the man and the woman.
[3] Neither party is deprived of civil act capacity.
[4] The marriage does not fall under one of the following prohibited cases:
- Sham marriage or divorce
- Child marriage, forced marriage, marriage deception, obstruction of marriage
- A person who is married or living as husband and wife with another, or unmarried marrying or living as husband and wife with a married person
- Marriage or cohabitation as husband and wife between relatives within the direct bloodline; between people with kinship within three generations; between adoptive parents and adopted children; those who were adoptive parents and adopted children, father-in-law with daughter-in-law, mother-in-law with son-in-law, stepfather with stepdaughter, stepmother with stepson

Which authority has the jurisdiction to register a marriage in Vietnam?
Based on Article 17 of the Civil Status Law 2014, the authority for marriage registration and the content of the marriage certificate are stipulated as follows:
Article 17. Authority for marriage registration and content of the marriage certificate
- The People's Committee at the commune level where one of the two parties resides conducts the marriage registration.
- The marriage certificate must contain the following information:
a) Full name, middle name, and name; date, month, year of birth; ethnicity; nationality; place of residence; information on identity documents of both parties;
b) Date, month, year of marriage registration;
c) Signatures or fingerprints of both parties and confirmation of the civil status registration agency.
Based on Article 37 of the Civil Status Law 2014, the authority for marriage registration is stipulated as follows:
Article 37. Authority for marriage registration
- The People's Committee at the district level where the Vietnamese citizen resides conducts the marriage registration between a Vietnamese citizen and a foreigner; between a Vietnamese citizen residing domestically and a Vietnamese citizen residing abroad; between Vietnamese citizens residing abroad; between Vietnamese citizens who are also foreign nationals with Vietnamese citizens or foreigners.
- In cases where foreigners residing in Vietnam request marriage registration, the People's Committee at the district level where one of the two parties resides conducts the marriage registration.
Thus, the authority for marriage registration is stipulated as follows:
- The People's Committee at the commune level where one of the two parties resides handles marriage registration.
- The People's Committee at the district level has the authority to register marriages in the following cases:
+ Vietnamese citizens marrying foreigners;
+ Vietnamese citizens residing domestically marrying Vietnamese citizens residing abroad;
+ Vietnamese citizens residing abroad marrying each other;
+ Vietnamese citizens who also have foreign nationality marrying Vietnamese citizens or foreigners.
