Treatment Protocols for Ophthalmia Neonatorum: Specific Regulations
Based on Section 3.2.4, Subsection 3.2, Section 3 of the guidelines for diagnosis and treatment of Gonorrhea (Issued together with Decision 5165/QD-BYT in 2021), the specific treatment regimen for gonococcal ophthalmia in newborns is as follows:
Treatment of conjunctivitis caused by gonorrhea in newborns, choose one of the following regimens:
- Ceftriaxone 50 mg/kg (maximum 150 mg), intramuscular single dose
- Kanamycin 25 mg/kg (maximum 75 mg), intramuscular single dose
- Spectinomycin 25 mg/kg (maximum 75 mg), intramuscular single dose.
* Note: Monitor for any adverse drug reactions.
- b) Prophylactic treatment of conjunctivitis due to gonorrhea and Chlamydia for all newborns immediately after birth and for both eyes. Choose one of the following regimens:
- Tetracycline hydrochloride 1% eye ointment
- Erythromycin 0.5% eye ointment
- Povidone-iodine 2.5% solution (aqueous solvent)
- Silver nitrate 1% solution
- Chloramphenicol 1% eye ointment
* Note: Avoid touching the eyes while applying the medication. The use of povidone-iodine alcohol solvent solution is not recommended.
