Title: Mother-in-law Threatens to Use Force to Compel Daughter-in-law to Bear a Son: What is the Penalty?

In the case where a daughter-in-law gives birth to only daughters, and the mother-in-law threatens to use force, exerts pressure to compel the daughter-in-law to give birth to a son, how will this be handled? Please provide advice according to the latest regulations.

Section 3, Article 101 of Decree 117/2020/ND-CP (Effective from November 15, 2020) stipulates penalties for violations of regulations on coercive implementation of family planning as follows:

A fine ranging from VND 3,000,000 to VND 5,000,000 shall be imposed for any of the following acts:

- Threatening to use force, intimidating mentally to coerce others not to use contraceptive methods or to stop using contraceptive methods;

- Threatening to use force, intimidating mentally to coerce others to become pregnant; to have more children when they have already given birth to all boys or all girls.

Thus, a mother-in-law who threatens to use force to coerce her daughter-in-law to give birth to a son when she has already given birth to all daughters shall be fined from VND 3 million to VND 5 million.

Sincerely!
