Title: Is Orthodontic Treatment a Reason for Military Service Exemption?

I am 19 years old this year and currently undergoing orthodontic treatment. I have just received a notice for a military service medical examination. In my case of wearing braces, am I eligible to participate in military service?

In accordance with Clause 3, Article 4 of Circular 148/2018/TT-BQP on health standards, the provisions are as follows:

- Selection of citizens with health category 1, 2, 3 in accordance with Joint Circular 16/2016/TTLT-BYT-BQP dated June 30, 2016, issued by the Minister of Health - Minister of National Defense regulating medical examinations for military service.

- For agencies, units, and positions specified in Point b, Clause 2 of this Article, the selection will meet the specific standards regulated by the Ministry of National Defense.

- Citizens with health category 3 for eye refraction disorders (myopia of 1.5 diopters or more, hyperopia of any level); drug addiction, HIV, AIDS infections, are not called for military enlistment.

And in Appendix 1 issued with Joint Circular 16/2016/TTLT-BYT-BQP, the provisions are as follows:

No DISEASES SCORE
19 Tooth decay:
- Only level 1 - 2 tooth decay, no or little effect on chewing function 2
- Having ≤ 3 level 3 tooth decay 2
- Having 4 - 5 level 3 tooth decay 3
- Having 6 level 3 tooth decay 4T
- Having 7 or more level 3 tooth decay 5T
20 Tooth loss:
- Still have 28 teeth (excluding wisdom teeth) 1
- Lost teeth with functional and aesthetic prosthetics 2
- Lost ≤ 3 teeth, including 1 large molar or incisor, chewing function remaining 85% or more 2
- Lost 4 teeth, including ≤ 2 large molars or incisors, chewing function remaining 70% or more 3
- Lost 5 - 7 teeth, including ≤ 3 large molars or incisors, chewing function remaining 50% or more 4
- Lost more than 7 teeth, including > 3 large molars or incisors, chewing function remaining < 50% 5
21 Gingivitis:
- Gingivitis involving ≤ 5 teeth, no deep pus pockets 1
- Gingivitis involving ≥ 6 teeth, no deep pus pockets 2

Based on the above regulations, orthodontics (braces) are not mentioned among the dental, oral, and maxillofacial diseases. Therefore, if you meet other conditions for military enrollment, you are still eligible to participate in military service.

Respectfully!
