Vietnam: What are the regulations on specific treatment regimen for patients infected with Genital Herpes Simplex virus?
Under Sub-section 3.2, Section 3 of the Guidelines for Diagnosis and Treatment of Herpes Simplex (Promulgated with Decision 5183/QD-BYT in 2021), the specific treatment regimen for patients infected with Genital Herpes Simplex virus in Vietnam is prescribed as follows:

Primary Genital Herpes |
• Aciclovir 400 mg orally 3 times/day for 10 days (standard dose) • Aciclovir 200 mg orally 5 times/day for 10 days • Valaciclovir 500 mg orally 2 times/day for 10 days • Famciclovir 250 mg orally 3 times/day for 10 days |

Recurrent Genital Herpes |
• Aciclovir 400 mg orally 3 times/day for 5 days, or 800 mg orally 2 times/day for 5 days, or 800 mg orally 3 times/day for 2 days • Valaciclovir 500 mg orally 2 times/day for 3 days |
• Aciclovir 400 mg orally 3 times/day for 5 days • Valaciclovir 500 mg orally 2 times/day for 5 days • Famciclovir 500 mg orally 2 times/day for 5 days |
Prophylactic Treatment |
• Aciclovir 400 mg orally 2 times/day daily, for 6-12 months • Valaciclovir 500 mg orally 1 time/day daily, for 6-12 months • Famciclovir 250 mg orally 2 times/day daily, for 6-12 months |
• Aciclovir 400 mg orally 2 times/day daily, for 6-12 months • Valaciclovir 500 mg orally 2 times/day daily, for 6-12 months • Famciclovir 500 mg orally 2 times/day daily, for 6-12 months |
Adjunct local treatment: saline rinses, and topical anesthetics such as lidocaine. Topical Aciclovir is less effective.
