10 nutritional advice for a balanced diet until 2030 in Vietnam

On November 29, 2024, the Minister of Health of Vietnam issued Decision 3594/QD-BYT of 2024 regarding 10 nutritional advice for a balanced diet until 2030. The 10 pieces of nutritional advice until 2030 are as follows:

Advice No. 1: Consume a sufficient, balanced, and diverse variety of foods daily; reasonably combine foods of animal and plant origin.

Advice No. 2: Use daily nutrition-rich foods; various colored vegetables, roots, and fruits. Read the nutritional information on food labels carefully before purchasing and using.

Advice No. 3: Use protein-rich foods reasonably; preferably eat fish, poultry, and nuts in daily meals; consume red meat in moderation.

Advice No. 4: Drink enough water daily.

Advice No. 5: Pregnant and breastfeeding women should adhere to appropriate dietary policies; supplement with iron and folic acid or multi-micronutrients as directed.

Advice No. 6: Breastfeed early within the first hour after birth, exclusively breastfeed for the first 6 months; provide appropriate complementary foods and continue breastfeeding until 24 months or longer.

Advice No. 7: Limit the use of fried foods, fast foods high in fat, foods high in salt, sugar, sugary drinks, and alcoholic beverages.

Advice No. 8: Ensure safety in the selection, preparation, and preservation of food.

Advice No. 9: Properly organize family meals. Eat adequately (breakfast, lunch, dinner) suitable for age, not overeating, not skipping meals.

Advice No. 10: Maintain and control a reasonable weight; practice an active lifestyle, enhancing physical activity suitable for age and health status.

What are the duties of the nutrition department in hospitals in Vietnam?

Based on Article 9 of Circular 18/2020/TT-BYT, the duties of the Nutrition Department or Nutrition Division within hospitals are as follows:

Article 9. Responsibilities of the Nutrition Department or Nutrition Division

  1. Advise hospital leaders on nutrition activities within the hospital.
  1. Develop and implement professional technical procedures on clinical nutrition within the hospital.
  1. Organize examinations, counseling, and treatment activities with nutritional policies suitable to the nutrition and health conditions of patients.
  1. Organize the development of nutritional policies suitable to the nutrition and health conditions of inpatients within the hospital.
  1. Coordinate with clinical departments to designate dietary nutritional policies for patients suffering from severe malnutrition, or patients being attended to under level 1 care.
  1. Manage food, process, provide dietary nutritional policies for patients at their bedside. Inspect and supervise food safety within the hospital.

Thus, the responsibilities of the Nutrition Department in hospitals are as follows:

- Advise hospital leaders on nutrition activities within the hospital.

- Develop and implement professional technical procedures on clinical nutrition within the hospital.

- Organize examinations, counseling, and treatment activities with nutritional policies suitable to the nutrition and health conditions of patients.

- Organize the development of nutritional policies suitable to the nutrition and health conditions of inpatients within the hospital.

- Coordinate with clinical departments to designate dietary nutritional policies for patients suffering from severe malnutrition, or patients being attended to under level 1 care.

- Manage food, process, provide dietary nutritional policies for patients at their bedside. Inspect and supervise food safety within the hospital.

- Inspect and supervise compliance with nutritional activity regulations in clinical departments and throughout the hospital.

- Act as the focal point for developing counseling, communication materials on nutrition, and food safety for patients, patient families, and others in the hospital.

- Implement training activities, provide guidance on nutrition and food safety.

- Conduct scientific research, apply scientific and technical advances on nutrition and food safety in treatment, disease prevention, and health promotion.

What are the responsibilities of nutrition specialists in Vietnam?

Based on Clause 2 of Article 12 in Circular 18/2020/TT-BYT, the responsibilities of nutrition professionals are as follows:

- Examine, counsel, and treat diseases related to nutrition using nutritional policies appropriate to the nutritional status and health condition of both inpatients and outpatients.

- Coordinate with treating doctors, nutrition department doctors to examine, counsel patients, appoint cases with nutritional issues or require combined treatment through nutrition, or consult with the treating doctors to designate nutritional policies.

- Develop and apply nutritional policies appropriate to the nutritional status and health condition of patients.

- Consult with clinical departments for nutritional intervention when required.

- Inspect and supervise nutritional activities and the provisioning of dietary plans as per regulations.

- Conduct communication activities about nutrition and food safety for individuals within the hospital.

- Perform other tasks as assigned by the Head of the Department.
