When shall a passport in Vietnam be invalid?
Pursuant to Article 7 of the Law on Entry and Exit of Vietnamese Citizens in 2019 stipulating validity of entry and exit documents as follows:
Validity of entry and exit documents
1. Diplomatic passports and service passports shall be effective from 1 to 5 years; can be extended no more than 3 years per instance.
2. Validity of regular passports is as follows:
a) Regular passports issued to persons from 14 years of age shall be effective for 10 years and shall not be extended;
b) Regular passports issued to persons under 14 years of age shall be effective for 05 years and shall not be extended;
c) Regular passports issued by shortened procedures shall be effective for no more than 12 months and shall not be extended.
3. Laissez-passers shall be effective for no more than 12 months and shall not be extended.
As regulations above, a passport expires when the validity period of the passport is no longer valid. For each type of passport, there will be a different validity period. Specifically as follows:
- Diplomatic passports and service passports shall be effective from 1 to 5 years
- Regular passports issued to persons from 14 years of age shall be effective for 10 years;
- Regular passports issued to persons under 14 years of age shall be effective for 05 years;
- Regular passports issued by shortened procedures shall be effective for no more than 12 months.

Is it permissible to extend the validity of a passport in Vietnam?
Pursuant to Article 7 of the Law on Entry and Exit of Vietnamese Citizens in 2019 stipulating validity of entry and exit documents as follows:

As regulations above, depending on the case, a passport that has expired may be extended or not, including:
For passports that can be extended:
- Diplomatic passports can be extended no more than 3 years per instance.
- Service passports can be extended no more than 3 years per instance.
For passports that cannot be extended:
- Regular passports issued to persons from 14 years of age;
- Regular passports issued to persons under 14 years of age;
- Regular passports issued by shortened procedures.
What are procedures for re-issuance of an expired passport in Vietnam?
Pursuant to Article 15 of the Law on Entry and Exit of Vietnamese Citizens in 2019 (amended by Clause 3.a and 3.b, Article 1 of the Law on amendments to some Articles of Law on Entry and Exit of Vietnamese Citizens and Law on Entry, Exit, Transit and Residence of Foreigners in Vietnam in 2023) stipulating re-issuance of an expired passport in Vietnam as follows:
Step 1: Prepare the documents
The applicant for a passport shall submit a completed application form.
- Prepare 2 portrait photos.
- Present a valid identity card, national identification card, or passport.
- Some documents related to the issuance of ordinary passports in Vietnam include:
+ The most recent valid ordinary passport for those who have been issued a passport. If the valid passport is lost, it must be accompanied by a lost report or notification of receipt of the application from the competent authority.
+ A copy of the birth certificate or extract of the birth certificate for a person under the age of 14 who has not been assigned a personal identification number. If there is no copy of the birth certificate or extract of the birth certificate, then a photocopy must be submitted and the original must be presented for checking and comparison.
+ A copy of the document issued by the competent authority of Vietnam to prove the legal representative for a person with no capacity for civil acts, a person with difficulty in cognition and control of actions, or a person under the age of 14.
If there is no copy, then a photocopy must be submitted and the original must be presented for checking and comparison.
Step 2: Submit the documents to the Immigration Department of the Provincial Public Security Agency where you usually reside or temporarily reside.
Step 3: Receive the results. If the passport is not issued, the Immigration Department will reply in writing, stating the reason.
