What is round timber? Determining the length and diameter of round timber?
My name is Huynh Nga, and I have permanent residency in Dak Lak. Currently, I live and study in Ho Chi Minh City. In preparation for my thesis on forest protection solutions, I have been researching the management and traceability of forest products. However, I am not very clear on:What is round timber?What is sawn timber like?I kindly request your assistance.(*****@gmail.com)
What is round timber?
According to Clause 2, Article 3 of Circular 27/2018/TT-BNNPTNT regulating the management and traceability of forest products issued by the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, effective from January 1, 2019, it is stipulated:
- Round timber is wood that retains its original shape after harvesting. The core-knocked wood has a small end diameter from 10 cm to under 20 cm and a length of 1 meter or more, or has a small end diameter from 20 cm or more and a length of 30 cm or more. For planted forest wood, Melaleuca forest, and mangrove forest, the small end diameter is from 6 cm or more, with a length of 1 meter or more. For wood belonging to the List of rare, precious forest plants and animals, and the Appendices of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (hereinafter abbreviated as CITES), size is not differentiated.
- Sawed wood is processed into boxes, planks, and boards.
How to determine the length and diameter of round timber?
According to Clause 1, Article 4 of Circular 27/2018/TT-BNNPTNT, the method for determining the length and diameter of round timber is as follows:
- Method for measuring and recording the number of tree trunks, timber boxes:
a) Length of round timber: measure the shortest distance between the cross-sections at both ends of the timber log. If the cross-section at the end of the timber is slanted or sunken, measure at the position with the shortest length. The unit of measure is meters (m), taken to two decimal places;
b) Diameter of round timber: measure at both ends of the timber log (excluding the bark); for each end of the timber log, measure at 2 positions with the largest and smallest diameters, then calculate the arithmetic average to determine the diameter; the unit of measure is centimeters (cm);
