Pursuant to Appendix 4 issued together with Circular 79/2024/TT-BCA, the regulations on dimensions, position of letters, numbers, and symbols of automobile license plates in Vietnam are as follows:

[1] Arrangement of letters and numbers on the license plate:

License plates consist of groups of letters and numbers arranged as follows:

- All lines of letters and numbers are symmetrically arranged in the license plate.

- The first two numbers indicate the locality where the vehicle is registered (according to Appendix 02 issued together with Circular 79/2024/TT-BCA) and the registration series is regulated in Article 37 of Circular 79/2024/TT-BCA.

- The second group of numbers is the registration order, including 05 natural numbers, ranging from 000.01 to 999.99.

Example: In drawing H1, the license plate shows:

+ 30 is the locality registration symbol.

+ F is the registered license plate series.

+ 256.58 is the registration order.

[2] Regarding the size of letters and numbers.

- Height of letters and numbers: 63 mm.

- Width of letters and numbers: 38 mm.

- Thickness of letters and numbers: 10 mm.

- The horizontal line under the Police emblem on the long plate has the dimensions: length 14 mm; width 10 mm.

- The dot (.) separating the first three ordinal numbers from the last two has dimensions of 10 mm x 10 mm.

[3] Specific positioning of letters, numbers, and symbols on the license plate:

- All lines of letters and numbers are symmetrically arranged on the license plate.

- The distance between letters and numbers: 10 mm.

The main line on the left side of the number 1 is 29 mm from other letters and numbers. The main line on the left side between two adjacent 1s is 48 mm.

- For long license plates: Police emblems are embossed above the horizontal line, with the top edge of the emblem aligned with the top edge of the letters and numbers.

- For short license plates: Police emblems are embossed in the middle of the two rows of upper and lower letters, numbers, 5 mm away from the left edge.

Which license plates in Vietnam are not managed by identification code?

Based on Clause 3, Article 36 of the Road Traffic Safety and Order Law 2024 on license plates states:

Article 36. License Plates

3. License plates are managed according to identification codes, except for the license plates specified at point b, clause 2 of this Article. License plate management by identification code is regulated as follows:

a) License plates are assigned and managed according to the owner's identification code, whether an individual or organization; in the case that an organization has no identification code, management will occur according to the tax code, establishment decision, or equivalent documents;

b) If a vehicle is no longer in use, damaged beyond repair, or transferred for ownership, the owner shall retain the license plate number for a period of 05 years to register for another vehicle owned by him; if the stated period expires, the license plate number will be retrieved by the vehicle registration agency and entered into the license plate repository for assignment to other organizations or individuals, except in the case of transfer, exchange, donation, or inheritance of the vehicle associated with an auctioned license plate;

c) In the case of a change in the owner's information regarding headquarters, permanent residence, or temporary residence, they may retain the identification number of the license plate.
