What are regulations on location of signs vertically and horizontally on the road in Vietnam?

Pursuant to Article 20 of National Technical Regulation QCVN 41:2019/BGTVT stipulates as follows:

Location of signs vertically and horizontally on the road

20.1. Signs are placed in a position so that traffic participants can easily see them and have enough time to prepare to take precautions, change speed or change direction, but must not obstruct the visibility and movement of participants.

20.2. The sea is placed vertically, the sea surface faces the opposite direction; The sign is placed on the right hand side or above the driveway (except in special cases). In addition, depending on each case, additional signs can be placed on the left side in the direction of travel.

20.3. In case the sign is placed on a pole (can be placed on a lighting pole or electric pole), the distance from the outer edge of the sign along the road horizontally from the edge of the driveway is at least 0.5 m and a maximum of 1.7 m. m. In cases where there is no curb, sidewalk, out of sight or other special cases, it is allowed to adjust horizontally, but the edge of the sign on the driving side must not overlap the edge of the road and not be far away from the edge of the road no more than 3.5 m.

Group of danger and warning signs in Vietnam

Danger and warning signs are a group of signs that let traffic participants know in advance of dangers on the road so they can proactively prevent them in time. The sign is mainly in the shape of an equilateral triangle, with a red border, a yellow background, and a black drawing depicting the event that needs to be signaled.

Effects of danger and warning signs in Vietnam

Danger and warning signs are used to inform traffic participants of the nature of the danger or of things that need attention and precautions on the road. When encountering danger and warning signs, traffic participants must slow down to the necessary level, pay attention and be prepared to handle situations that may arise to prevent accidents.

Location of danger and warning signs according to travel direction and effectiveness of the signs in Vietnam

According to Article 34 of Regulation QCVN 41:2019/BGTVT issued together with Circular 54/2019/TT-BGTVT regulating the location of danger and warning signs in the travel direction and the effectiveness of the signs as follows:

34.1. Danger and warning signs are placed in front of the intended location at a suitable distance from vehicles participating in traffic and the reality of the scene to ensure easy observation and not affect visibility.

34.2. The distance from the sea to the intended location should be uniform across the entire road with the same average vehicle speed. In cases of special necessity, the sign can be placed farther or closer. It is necessary to have additional sign number S.502 "Distance to signaling object".

34.3. License plate W.208 "Intersection with priority road": in densely populated areas, place it directly in front of the intersection with priority roads, outside of densely populated areas, depending on the distance, place it far or near the intersection location with priority road that has additional sign number S.502.

34.4. Each type of sign signals a dangerous element that may occur in a location or road section. If dangerous factors occur on a road section, place auxiliary plate number S.501 "Scope of effect of the sign" to clearly indicate the length of the dangerous road section below plates numbered W.202 (a,b), W.219, W.220, W.221a, W.225, W.228, W.231, W.232. If the length has the same major dangerous factor, place a repeat sign with additional sign No. S.501 recording the length of the remaining dangerous factor next.

34.5. Limit the use of dangerous signs and widespread warnings if the properties do not really pose a danger to road users.

34.6. Within speed-restricted roads:

34.6.1. In case a dangerous turning point has a sign limiting the maximum speed to less than or equal to 40 km/h, there is no need to place a sign indicating the dangerous turning point (number plate W.201 (a,b) and number plate W.202 (a,b);

34.6.2. In case the road is bad, slippery, or uneven, if a sign restricting the maximum speed to less than 50 km/h is placed, there is no need to place a sign about the uneven or slippery road (plate number W.221 (a,b) and license plate number W.222a);

34.6.3. Roads in densely populated areas, with slow vehicle speeds and continuous intersections at intersections, do not necessarily have license plates W.205 (a, b, c, d, e) "Intersection roads ".

34.7. At places where the priority road intersects with other roads that are not considered intersections according to the provisions of this Regulation, it is not necessary to place signs W.207 and W.208. However, it is possible to use these signs or use sagging-eye markings when deemed necessary.

Best regards!
