Vietnam: Is it mandatory for the dimension of traffic signs to comply with standards?

According to the regulations, is it mandatory for the dimension of traffic signs to comply with standards in Vietnam?

At Article 16 of the National Technical Regulation QCVN41:2019/BGTVT, the dimension of traffic signs in Vietnam is stipulated as follows:

- This regulation stipulates the dimensions of signs, drawings on signs, and corresponding text for urban roads with a coefficient of 1 (see Figure 1 and Table 1). In special cases, the dimensions of the signs can be adjusted to ensure balance, aesthetics, and clarity of information.

- For other types of roads, the dimensions of signs, drawings on signs, and text should be multiplied by the corresponding coefficient in Table 2, with the dimensions rounded off according to the following principles:

+ If the unit place ≤ 5, it is rounded to 5;

+ If the unit place > 5, it is rounded to 0 and the tens place is increased by 1 unit.

Note:

(*) Regular roads are those that are not highways, dual carriageways, or urban roads.

(**) The dimensional coefficient for directional signs in Table 2 does not apply to highways. Highways have separate regulations in Chapter 9 of this Regulation.

(***) For signs installed on gantry frames or overhang frames on dual carriageways in urban areas, the same coefficient as dual carriageways outside urban areas is used.

In certain special cases, such as for uniformity on road sections with similar widths but with and without a median strip, or short interleaved segments, the dimensions of the signs are to be the same to facilitate visibility and aesthetics for road users.

- Detailed specifications for text, dimensions of signs, and drawings on signs are stipulated in Appendices K, M, and P of this Regulation. For directional signs particularly, the dimensions may be adjusted based on actual conditions to ensure clarity, balance, and aesthetics of the signs.

- For low-grade technical roads (Grade V, Grade VI, or ungraded), rural roads, depending on the scale and operating conditions, the size coefficients of 1.25, 1.00, or 0.75 shall be applied accordingly.

- Mobile signs, temporary signs for short periods, and signs used in special cases (sign positions in narrow medians, narrow shoulders, or obscured views in alleys) can have dimensions adjusted with coefficients of 0.5 or 0.75 (rounded as stipulated).

- For foreign-facing roads, sign text dimensions should be adjusted to fit the necessary text as per the provisions of this Regulation.

=> Thus, traffic signs in Vietnam have shapes as specified above. The dimensions of these signs must conform to standards as per the regulation.

Sincerely.
