What are categories of driver license in Vietnam?
Based on Article 57 of the Road Traffic Safety and Order Law 2024 stipulating the driver licenses:
Article 57. Driver license
- The driver license includes the following categories:
a) Category A1 is issued to motorcyclists with engine displacement up to 125 cm3 or electric motor power up to 11 kW;
b) Category A is issued to motorcyclists with engine displacement over 125 cm3 or electric motor power over 11 kW, and vehicles stipulated for category A1 driver license;
c) Category B1 is issued to tricyclists and vehicles stipulated for category A1 driver license;
d) Category B is issued to drivers of passenger cars up to 8 seats (excluding the driver's seat); freight cars and special-purpose vehicles with a total design weight of up to 3,500 kg; vehicles as per category B driver license towing trailers with a total design weight of up to 750 kg;

Thus, from January 1, 2025, the driver license includes the following categories:
- Category A1 is issued to motorcyclists with engine displacement up to 125 cm3 or electric motor power up to 11 kW
- Category A is issued to motorcyclists with engine displacement over 125 cm3 or electric motor power over 11 kW, and vehicles stipulated for category A1 driver license
- Category B1 is issued to tricyclists and vehicles stipulated for category A1 driver license
- Category B is issued to drivers of passenger cars up to 8 seats (excluding the driver's seat); freight cars and special-purpose vehicles with a total design weight of up to 3,500 kg; vehicles as per category B driver license towing trailers with a total design weight of up to 750 kg
- Category C1 is issued to drivers of freight cars and special-purpose vehicles with a total design weight over 3,500 kg to 7,500 kg; freight vehicles as per category C1 driver license towing trailers with a total design weight of up to 750 kg; vehicles as per category B driver license
- Category C is issued to drivers of freight cars and special-purpose vehicles with a total design weight over 7,500 kg; freight vehicles as per category C driver license towing trailers with a total design weight of up to 750 kg; vehicles as per category B and C1 driver licenses
- Category D1 is issued to drivers of passenger cars with more than 8 seats (excluding the driver's seat) up to 16 seats (excluding the driver's seat); passenger vehicles as per category D1 driver license towing trailers with a total design weight of up to 750 kg; vehicles as per B, C1, C licenses
- Category D2 is issued to drivers of passenger vehicles (including buses) with more than 16 seats (excluding the driver's seat) up to 29 seats (excluding the driver's seat); passenger vehicles as per category D2 driver license towing trailers with a total design weight of up to 750 kg; vehicles as per B, C1, C, D1 licenses
- Category D is issued to drivers of passenger vehicles (including buses) with more than 29 seats (excluding the driver's seat); sleeper buses; passenger vehicles as per category D driver license towing trailers with a total design weight of up to 750 kg; vehicles as per B, C1, C, D1, D2 licenses
- Category BE is issued to drivers of vehicles as per category B driver license towing trailers with a total design weight over 750 kg
- Category C1E is issued to drivers of vehicles as per category C1 driver license towing trailers with a total design weight over 750 kg
- Category CE is issued to drivers of vehicles as per category C driver license towing trailers with a total design weight over 750 kg; tractor-trailers
- Category D1E is issued to drivers of vehicles as per category D1 driver license towing trailers with a total design weight over 750 kg
- Category D2E is issued to drivers of vehicles as per category D2 driver license towing trailers with a total design weight over 750 kg
- Category DE is issued to drivers of vehicles as per category D driver license towing trailers with a total design weight over 750 kg; multi-carriage passenger vehicles
What is the age requirement for obtaining driver licenses in Vietnam?
Based on Article 59 of the Road Traffic Safety and Order Law 2024, the age requirement for acquiring a driver license is as follows:
- Persons aged 16 years or older may operate motorcycles
- Persons aged 18 years or older may be issued a driver license of categories A1, A, B1, B, C1; and may be issued a certificate of legal road traffic knowledge for operating special-purpose machines participating in road traffic
- Persons aged 21 years or older may be issued a driver license of categories C, BE
- Persons aged 24 years or older may be issued a driver license of categories D1, D2, C1E, CE
- Persons aged 27 years or older may be issued a driver license of categories D, D1E, D2E, DE
- The maximum age for drivers of passenger cars (including buses) with more than 29 seats (excluding the driver's seat), and sleeper buses is 57 years for males and 55 years for females
