Safe Distance Between Two Cars on the Highway
In Article 11 of the Circular 31/2019/TT-BGTVT, it is stipulated:
When operating a vehicle participating in road traffic, the driver of the vehicle or special-use vehicle must maintain a safe distance from the vehicle immediately in front of theirs; in places with a sign "Minimum distance between two vehicles," a distance not less than the value indicated on the sign must be maintained.
Safe distance between two vehicles when participating in road traffic
a) Under dry road conditions, the safe distance corresponding to each speed is stipulated as follows:
Operating speed (km/h) | Minimum safe distance (m) |
V = 60 | 35 |
60 < V ≤ 80 | 55 |
80 < V ≤ 100 | 70 |
100 < V ≤ 120 | 100 |
When operating a vehicle at a speed below 60 km/h, the driver must actively maintain a safe distance appropriate to the vehicle immediately in front of theirs; this distance depends on the density of vehicles and actual traffic conditions to ensure traffic safety.
b) When it is raining, foggy, the road is slippery, the road has winding terrain, slopes, limited visibility, the driver must adjust the safe distance to be greater than the value indicated on the sign or the value stipulated in point a of this Clause.
=> Thus, according to the above provisions, the safe distance between 2 vehicles circulating on the highway must ensure the minimum distance as indicated on the sign. In some cases, due to weather or traffic conditions, the driver must actively maintain a reasonable distance.
Sincerely.
