Is it necessary to retake the exam if the driver's license has expired for 6 months?
According to Clause 1, Article 36 of Circular 12/2017/TT-BGTVT, regulations on re-issuance of driver's licenses are as follows:
For individuals whose driver's licenses have expired:

- From 01 year or more from the expiration date, they must retake both the theoretical and practical examination to be re-issued a driver's license.
Thus, in the case where your driver's license has been expired for 06 months, you will be required to take the theoretical examination to get your driver's license re-issued.
Regarding the application for re-issuance of a driver's license expired for 06 months:
The driver should compile 01 set of application documents, which should be submitted directly to the Vietnam Road Administration or the Department of Transport. The application includes:
- A copy of the identity card or citizen identification card or valid passport with the identity card or citizen identification card number for Vietnamese citizens; a valid passport for overseas Vietnamese residents;
- A copy of a valid passport with a validity of more than 06 months and a temporary residence card or permanent residence card or diplomatic identity card or public service identity card for foreigners;
