Based on Article 59 of the Law on Road Traffic Order and Safety 2024, which regulates the age and health requirements of individuals operating road traffic vehicles in Vietnam:

1. The age of vehicle drivers and specialized machinery operators are regulated as follows:

a) Individuals 16 years and older are permitted to operate motorbikes;

b) Individuals 18 years and older are issued Category A1, A, B1, B, and C1 driving licenses and issued certificates of road traffic law knowledge training to operate specialized machinery on the road;

c) Individuals 21 years and older are issued Category C, BE driving licenses;

d) Individuals 24 years and older are issued Category D1, D2, C1E, and CE driving licenses;

dd) Individuals 27 years and older are issued Category D, D1E, D2E, and DE driving licenses;

e) The maximum age for drivers of passenger automobiles (including buses) with over 29 seats (excluding the driver's seat) and sleeper buses is 57 years for men and 55 years for women.

What types of motor vehicles in Vietnam are there?

Based on Article 34 of the Law on Road Traffic Order and Safety 2024, which Classifies road traffic vehicles:

Classification of Road Traffic Vehicles

1. Motor vehicles include:

a) Automobiles include: vehicles with four or more wheels powered by an engine, designed and manufactured to operate on roads, not on tracks, used for transporting people, goods, towing trailers, towing semi-trailers, or configured to perform special functions and utilities; electrically wired vehicles may be included; three-wheeled vehicles with a curb weight greater than 400 kg; automobiles do not include four-wheeled motorized passenger vehicles and four-wheeled motorized cargo vehicles;

b) Trailers are non-engine vehicles designed and manufactured to operate on roads, towed by automobiles; the majority of the trailer's total weight is not imposed on the towing vehicle;

- Four-wheeled motorized cargo vehicles are vehicles with four or more wheels, powered by an engine, designed, and manufactured to operate on roads, configured to transport goods, with the engine and cabin mounted on a single chassis, having no more than two rows of seats and carrying a maximum of 5 people (excluding the driver), with a design speed of no more than 60 km/h and a curb weight of no more than 550 kg; if the vehicle uses an electric motor, the engine power must not exceed 15 kW;

- Motorcycles include vehicles with two or three wheels powered by an engine, designed, and manufactured to operate on roads, excluding motorbikes; for three-wheeled vehicles, the curb weight must not exceed 400 kg;

- Motorbikes are vehicles with two or three wheels powered by an engine, designed, and manufactured to operate on roads, with a design speed not exceeding 50 km/h; if the driving engine is thermal, the working or equivalent displacement must not exceed 50 cm^3^; if the driving engine is electric, the engine power must not exceed 4 kW; motorbikes do not include motorized bicycles;

What documents must a driver carry when participating in road traffic in Vietnam?

Based on Article 56 of the Law on Road Traffic Order and Safety 2024, which regulates conditions of individuals driving on the road:

Conditions of Individuals Driving on the Road

1. Drivers who participate in road traffic must meet the age and health requirements as stipulated by law; have a valid, effective Driver license with points remaining, suitable for the type of vehicle being operated, issued by a competent authority, except for drivers of motorbikes specified in clause 4 of this article. When participating in road traffic, drivers must carry the following documents:

a) Vehicle registration certificate or certified copy of the vehicle registration certificate accompanied by the original documents of the financial institution, foreign bank branch still in effect in case the vehicle is mortgaged at a financial institution, foreign bank branch;

b) A suitable Driver license for the type of vehicle being operated;

c) Safety inspection and environmental protection certificate for motor vehicles as stipulated by law;

d) Compulsory civil liability insurance certificate for motor vehicle owners.
