What standards must the Ph.D. student advisor meet?
According to Article 5 of the Regulation on Admission and Training for Doctoral Degrees issued together with Circular 18/2021/TT-BGDDT (effective from August 15, 2021) stipulating the standards for doctoral research supervisors:
The main supervisor, co-supervisors, and independent supervisors for doctoral research must meet the standards of doctoral-level teaching staff as prescribed in Article 4 of this Regulation.
Within 05 years (60 months) up to the time of the decision to recognize the doctoral research supervisor, the main supervisor, independent supervisor, or co-supervisors, regardless of distinction between main and co-supervisors, must have additional research results in the specialized field related to the dissertation topic being supervised. Specifically:
a) Be the main author of a scientific conference report, scientific article published in journals listed in Web of Science or Scopus (hereinafter referred to collectively as WoS/Scopus list) or a chapter in a reference book published by reputable international publishers, or an article published in domestic scientific journals recognized by the State Professor Council with a scoring framework of at least 0.75 points, or a monograph published by reputable publishers domestically or internationally; the publications must achieve a total score of 4.0 points or more based on the maximum points stipulated by the State Professor Council for each type of work (no score division when co-authored); or
b) Be the author or co-author of at least 01 research result, application of science, technology registered and granted national or international patent; or of at least one official prize from national or international competitions recognized by competent state management agencies in the field of arts and sports.
- Each doctoral candidate shall have 01 or 02 supervisors, of which 01 must be a permanent staff member of the training institution or have teaching and scientific research contracts with the training institution as per legal regulations; working full-time at the institution with a contract duration that matches the candidate's overall study and research plan.
