What is classification of academic results in grades 10 and 11 in 2024 in Vietnam?
In Article 21 of Circular 22/2021/TT-BGDDT, there are regulations on entry into force as follows:
Entry into force
1. This Circular comes into force from September 5, 2021 according to following roadmap:
- From school year of 2021-2022 for the 6th grade.
- From school year of 2022-2023 for the 7th and 10th grade.
- From school year of 2023-2024 for the 8th and 11th grade.
- From school year of 2024-2025 for the 9th and 12th grade.
....
Thus, in the 22023-2024 school year, 10th and 11th grade students will apply Circular 22/2021/TT-BGDDT to evaluate and classify their academic performance.
In Clause 2, Article 9, Circular 22/2021/TT-BGDDT stipulates method to classify academic results in grades 10 and 11, which is evaluated by comments combined with evaluation by scores with 01 of 04 levels: Excellent, Good, Qualified, Unqualified.
For subjects assessed via both feedback and scores, DTBmhk is used to assess learning results of a student in each semester while DTBmcn is used to assess learning results of a student in the entire school year. Learning results of a student in each semester and in the entire school year shall be assessed by one of 4 categories: Excellent, Good, Qualified, Unqualified.
(1) Excellent:
- All subjects assessed with feedback are placed in Qualified category.
- All subjects assessed by both feedback and scores have minimum scores of 6.5 for DTBmhk and DTBmcn with 6 subjects among which have minimum scores of 8.0 for DTBmhk and DTBmcn.
(2) Good:
- All subjects assessed with feedback are placed in Qualified category.
- All subjects assessed by both feedback and scores have minimum scores of 5.0 for DTBmhk and DTBmcn with 6 subjects among which have minimum scores of 6.5 for DTBmhk and DTBmcn.
(3) Qualified:
- Have no more than 1 subject assessed via feedback placed in Unqualified category.
- At least 6 subjects assessed by both feedback and scores have minimum scores of 5.0 for DTBmhk and DTBmcn with 0 subjects have scores lower than 3.4 for DTBmhk and DTBmcn.
(4) Unqualified: Remaining cases.

In Clause 1, Article 13 Regulations on evaluation and classification of middle school and high school students issued with Circular 58/2011/TT-BGDDT amended by Clause 6, Article 2 of Circular 26/2020 /TT-BGDDT has regulations on how to classify 12th grade academic performance as follows:
1. Good grade, if it meets the following standards:
a) Grade point average of the subjects from 8.0 points or more in which average point of one of three subjects Math, Literature, Foreign Language shall be from 8.0 or more; separately for students of specialized classes of specialized high schools, it is required to add condition of average point of the specialized subject from 8.0 or more;
b) There are no subjects that grade point average is below 6.5;
c) The subjects evaluated by comments reached S.
2. Rather good grade, if it meets the following standard:
a) Grade point average of the subjects from 6.5 points or more in which average point of one of three subjects Math, Literature, Foreign Language shall be from 6.5 or more; separately for students of specialized classes of specialized high schools, it is required to add condition of average point of the specialized subject from 6.5 or more;
b) There are no subjects that grade point average is below 5.0;
c) The subjects evaluated by comments reached S.
3. Medium grade, if it meets the following standard:
a) Grade point average of the subjects from 5.0 points or more in which average point of one of three subjects Math, Literature, Foreign Language shall be from 5.0 or more; separately for students of specialized classes of specialized high schools, it is required to add condition of average point of the specialized subject from 5.0 or more;
b) There are no subjects that grade point average is below 3.5;
c) The subjects evaluated by comments reached S.
4. Weak grade: Grade point average of the subjects from 3.5 points or more, there are no subjects that grade point average is below 2.0.
5. Poor grade: The remaining cases.
Note: If the semester average score (DTBhk) or yearly average score (DTBcn) reaches the level of each category but because the result of only one subject is lower than the prescribed level for that category, the academic performance is affected. If ranked lower, it is adjusted as follows:
- If the DTBhk or DTBcn score reaches G grade but due to the results of only one subject, it must be reduced to Tb grade, then the G grade will be adjusted.
- If the DTBhk or DTBcn score is graded G but due to the results of only one subject and must be reduced to grade Y, the grade will be adjusted to A.
- If the DTBhk or DTBcn achieves the K grade but due to the results of only one subject, it must be reduced to Y grade, then the A grade will be adjusted.
- If the DTBhk or DTBcn scores at a K level but due to the results of only one subject, it must be downgraded to the Poor grade, then the W grade will be adjusted.
In what ways are high school students rewarded in Vietnam?
In Article 38 of the lower secondary school, upper secondary school and multi-level school charter issued together with Circular 32/2020/TT-BGDDT, it is stipulated reward and discipline:
1. Teachers, secondary schools and education authorities shall reward students with learning and training achievements in the following ways:
a) Commend them in front of the class or the whole school.
b) Grant them titles for students according to regulations.
c) Grant certificates and certificates of merit to students with outstanding achievements or exceptional improvement in learning or emulation movements and competition winners according to regulations and with permission from the Ministry of Education and Training.
d) Other ways to reward.
2. Students making a mistake during the learning and training process shall be corrected or disciplined in the following ways:
a) Give the student a reminder, directly support them in correcting their mistake.
b) Reprimand the student, inform the student’s parent(s) to have the parent(s) cooperate in supporting the student in correcting their mistake.
c) Suspend the student’s study at school for a definite period and take other correcting measures according to regulations from the Ministry of Education and Training.
