Pursuant to Article 3 of Circular 20/2020/TT-BGDDT regulating working hours, standard teaching hours and standard teaching hours as follows:

1. The working time of a lecturer during the school year is 44 weeks (equivalent to 1,760 administrative hours) to perform teaching duties, scientific research, community service and other professional duties. determined according to the school year after deducting the number of days off according to regulations.

3. Teaching time in the training plan is calculated by standard teaching hours, in which a 50-minute direct university-level theory lecture in class (or online teaching) is calculated by one standard teaching hour and is specified in Clause 1, Article 6 of this Circular.

For teaching content of a specific nature, university-level lectures directly in class (or online teaching) of more than 50 minutes must be converted accordingly by the head of the higher education institution.

4. The standard teaching hours of lecturers in a school year are set from 200 to 350 standard teaching hours (equivalent to 600 to 1,050 administrative hours); In which, standard hours of direct teaching in class (or online teaching) must ensure at least 50% of the prescribed norm. Heads of higher education institutions base on the unit's development goals and strategies; specific characteristics of the subject, field of study and specific conditions of the unit to decide the standard teaching hours of lecturers in a school year accordingly.

5. Special cases

a) Lecturers during the probationary period can only perform a maximum of 50% of the standard teaching hours, and are exempted from scientific research tasks to spend time attending classes, teaching assistants and participating in lecturespractice.

b) Lecturers who are on leave to enjoy social insurance benefits or take leave according to the provisions of the current Labor Code are exempt from standard teaching hours in proportion to the time off.

Thus, lecturers during the probationary period only perform a maximum of 50% of the standard teaching hours in Vietnam. Currently, the standard teaching hours for lecturers in a school year are set from 200 to 350 standard teaching hours (equivalent to 600 to 1,050 administrative hours). Therefore, you who are a trainee lecturer only need to carry out a maximum of 50% of the standard teaching hours according to the above regulations.

How much time must university lecturers spend during the school year doing scientific research activities in Vietnam?

According to Article 5 of Circular 20/2020/TT-BGDDT regulations on scientific research as follows:

1. Lecturers must spend at least 1/3 of their total working time during the school year (equivalent to 586 administrative hours) to do scientific research.

2. The assignment and implementation of scientific research tasks for lecturers must be consistent with the conditions, scientific potential, development strategy of the higher education institution and in accordance with the professional capacity of the lecturers.

3. Each year, lecturers must complete assigned scientific research tasks corresponding to the job title or position they are holding. The scientific research results of lecturers are evaluated through scientific and technological products, research activities and technology transfer; At least equivalent to a basic-level scientific research project that has been approved as satisfactory or higher or an article published in a scientific journal with an international standard code ISSN or a scientific report at specialized scientific conferences.

Heads of higher education institutions assign scientific research tasks to lecturers and specifically regulate the number of scientific research hours converted from various types of scientific and technological products, research activities and technology transfer.

4. For lecturers who do not complete scientific research tasks according to regulations, heads of higher education institutions will consider the level and specific circumstances when evaluating the results of performing tasks in school year, emulation rankings and resolution of related regimes and policies; At the same time, it is allowed to offset standard teaching hours into scientific research hours for these lecturers.

According to this Article, university lecturers must spend at least 1/3 of their total working time during the school year (equivalent to 586 administrative hours) to do scientific research in Vietnam.
