What is the Age of Students Entering Grade Six?
According to Article 28 of the Education Law 2019, which regulates educational levels and ages in general education:
Article 28. Educational Levels and Ages in General Education
- The educational levels and ages in general education are regulated as follows:
a) Primary education is conducted over 05 academic years, from Grade 1 to the end of Grade 5. The student age for entering Grade 1 is 06 years old, calculated by year;
b) Lower secondary education is conducted over 04 academic years, from Grade 6 to the end of Grade 9. Students entering Grade 6 must have completed the primary education program. The age of students entering Grade 6 is 11 years old, calculated by year;
c) Upper secondary education is conducted over 03 academic years, from Grade 10 to the end of Grade 12. Students entering Grade 10 must have a lower secondary education diploma. The age of students entering Grade 10 is 15 years old, calculated by year.
- Cases where students exceed the specified age, including:
a) Students advancing grades early due to intellectual development;
b) Students exceeding the specified age due to grade repetition, students in economically and socially disadvantaged areas, ethnic minority students, students with disabilities, students with physical or intellectual developmental delays, orphans without support, students from poor households, repatriated overseas students, and other cases as regulated by law.
- General education is divided into basic education and career-oriented education stages. The basic education stage includes primary and lower secondary education; the career-oriented education stage includes upper secondary education. Students in vocational education institutions are taught the cultural knowledge of upper secondary education.

Thus, the age of students entering Grade 6 is 11 years old, calculated by year. However, students may advance grades early or be older than the specified age in the following cases:
- Students advancing grades early due to intellectual development
- Students repeating grades
- Students in economically and socially disadvantaged areas
- Ethnic minority students, students with disabilities
- Students with physical or intellectual developmental delays
- Orphans without support
- Students from poor households
- Repatriated overseas students and other cases as regulated by law.

What are the Goals of Lower Secondary Education?
According to Article 29 of the Education Law 2019, which regulates the goals of general education:
Article 29. Goals of General Education
- General education aims to comprehensively develop learners in terms of ethics, intelligence, physical fitness, aesthetics, basic skills, personal capacities, dynamism, and creativity; to shape the personality of socialist Vietnamese citizens and their civic responsibilities; to prepare learners to continue higher education, vocational education, or to participate in labor, building, and defending the country.
- Primary education aims to form the initial foundation for the development of ethics, intelligence, physical fitness, aesthetics, and capacities of students; to prepare students for lower secondary education.
- Lower secondary education aims to consolidate and develop the results of primary education; to ensure that students have a foundational general education, minimal necessary technical knowledge, and career orientation to continue to upper secondary education or vocational education programs.
- Upper secondary education aims to equip students with citizen knowledge; to ensure that students consolidate and develop the results of lower secondary education, complete general education, and have basic technical and career-oriented understanding; to create conditions for personal capacity development to choose developmental directions, continue higher education programs, vocational education, or participate in labor, building, and defending the country.
Thus, the goal of lower secondary education is to consolidate and develop the results of primary education; to ensure that students have a foundational general education, minimal necessary technical knowledge, and career orientation to continue to upper secondary education or vocational education programs.
