From November 25, 2023, what are the conditions for participating in the Exam for Selection of National Excellent Students in Vietnam?
Pursuant to Article 4 of the Regulations on the Exam for Selection of National Excellent Students issued together with Circular 17/2023/TT-BGDĐT stipulating conditions for participating in the Exam for Selection of National Excellent Students in Vietnam as follows:
Subjects to participate in the Exam for Selection of National Excellent Students
1. For the Exam for Selection of National Excellent Students:
a) Students who are currently enrolled in high school, have a good academic record, with a GPA of at least 8.0, and have been selected by their school to participate in the competition.
b) Each candidate is only allowed to participate in one subject in one academic year.
2. For the Olympic team selection competition:
Students who are currently enrolled in high school and belong to one of the following categories:
a) Selected by the Ministry of Education and Training from the students who won prizes in the Exam for Selection of National Excellent Students in the same academic year, based on the principle of descending order of scores, ensuring that the number of students selected for each subject does not exceed eight (08) times the number of students needed to select for the national team to compete in the international Olympic in that subject.
b) Did not participate in the Exam for Selection of National Excellent Students in the same academic year, but were members of the national team to compete in the regional Olympics; members of the national team to compete in the international Olympics in the previous academic year.
Therefore, from November 25, 2023, each candidate is only allowed to participate in one subject in one academic year. The conditions to participate in the Exam for Selection of National Excellent Students are as follows:
- Currently enrolled in high school;
- Have a good academic record, with a GPA of at least 8.0, according to the results of the end of the semester (or academic year) immediately preceding the exam;
- Have been selected by the team of the participating unit.

From November 25, 2023, what are included in the application of the Exam for Selection of National Excellent Students in Vietnam?
Pursuant to Article 13 of the Regulations on the Exam for Selection of National Excellent Students issued together with Circular 17/2023/TT-BGDĐT stipulating the application of the Exam for Selection of National Excellent Students in Vietnam as follows:
Application of the Exam for Selection of National Excellent Students
1. Candidate documents include:
a) Decision of the Head of the participating unit on the establishment of teams to participate in the Exam for Selection of National Excellent Students (with the list of students of each team);
b) Academic transcript of the grade (in case the exam is held before the end of the first semester of the school year) or the results of the classification of training (or discipline) and study (or academic performance) of the semester adjacent to the exam of each candidate, confirmed by the Principal of the school (in case the exam is held immediately after the end of the first semester of the school year).
2. Issuing of the Examinee Card:
a) The Head of the participating unit issues the Examinee Card for candidates under his/her unit; the issuance of the Examinee Card must be completed at least 10 days before the exam date;
b) The envelope of the Examinee Card must be pasted with a color photo of the candidate, sized 04cm x 06cm, taken according to the ID card photo style before the exam not more than 06 months and stamped by the unit.
Therefore, from November 25, 2023,the application of the Exam for Selection of National Excellent Students in Vietnam includes the following documents:
- Decision of the Head of the participating unit on the establishment of teams to participate in the Exam for Selection of National Excellent Students (with the list of students of each team);
- In case the exam is held before the end of the first semester of the school year: Academic transcript of the grade;
- In case the exam is held immediately after the end of the first semester of the school year: Results of the classification of training (or discipline) and study (or academic performance) of the semester adjacent to the exam of each candidate, confirmed by the Principal of the school.

Pursuant to Article 33 of the Regulations on the Exam for Selection of National Excellent Students issued together with Circular 56/2011/TT-BGDĐT stipulating the ranking of the Exam for Selection of National Excellent Students in Vietnam as follows:
Ranking of the Exam for Selection of National Excellent Students
1. Only individual prizes (First, Second, Third, and Encouragement) are awarded, for each subject.
2. After completing the scoring of the test papers, the order of the numbers of the answer sheets is ranked according to the test scores from high to low, to rank the prizes.
3. The percentage of prizes for each subject:
The total number of prizes, from Encouragement up, must not exceed 50% of the number of candidates participating in the exam; of which, the total number of First, Second, and Third prizes must not exceed 60% of the total number of prizes, and the number of First prizes must not exceed 5% of the total number of prizes.
4. Organizing the ranking: Based on the ranking plan proposed by the Examination Boards, the Chairman of the Examination Committee and the Standing Committee of the National High School Academic Competition Steering Committee will develop the ranking plan and submit it to the Minister of Education and Training for approval.

1. Only individual prizes (First, Second, Third, and Encouragement) are awarded, for each subject.
2. After completing the scoring of the test papers, the order of the numbers of the answer sheets is ranked according to the test scores from high to low, to rank the prizes.
3. The percentage of prizes for each subject:
The total number of prizes, from Encouragement up, must not exceed 60% of the number of candidates participating in the exam; of which, the total number of First, Second, and Third prizes must not exceed 60% of the total number of prizes, and the number of First prizes must not exceed 5% of the total number of prizes.
4. The ranking committee will build a ranking plan and submit it to the Chairman of the Examination Committee for review and processing in accordance with regulations.
As of November 25, 2023, the percentage of prizes for each subject in the Exam for Selection of National Excellent Students has been increased from 50% to 60%. Of the 60% of prizes, 60% are for First, Second, and Third prizes, and 5% are for First prizes. This change is intended to make the competition more fair and competitive, and to recognize more students for their academic achievements.
