How old can a person start first grade in Vietnam?
Related to the age of first grade students. I want to ask, I don't know how old a person has to be to start first grade? If my child is 8 years old, can shed start first grade? Because my child just returned from abroad.
Regarding the age of primary school students
According to Article 28 of the 2019 Education Law, the educational levels and entry ages are as follows:
1. Educational levels and age groups of general education are regulated as follows:
a) Primary education lasts for 05 school years, from the first to the fifth grade. The entry age for the first grade is 06;
b) Lower secondary education lasts for 04 school years, from the sixth to the ninth grade. Students must complete the primary educational programme before entering the sixth grade. The entry age for the sixth grade is 11;
c) Upper secondary education lasts for 03 school years, from the tenth to the twelfth grade. Students must complete the lower secondary educational programme before entering the tenth grade. The entry age for the tenth grade is 15;
In addition, Article 33 of the Regulations on Primary Schools, issued together with Circular 28/2020/TT-BGDDT, specifies the age of primary school students as follows:
- The age of students entering grade one is 6 years old and is calculated in years. Children with disabilities, physical or intellectual developmental delays, children in economically and socially disadvantaged areas, children from ethnic minority groups, orphaned children without support, children returning from abroad, children of foreign nationals studying or working in Vietnam may enter grade one at a higher age, but not exceeding 3 years. If a child enters grade one more than 3 years later than the prescribed age, the decision will be made by the head of the Department of Education and Training.
- Primary school students may study at an age higher than the prescribed age in the following cases: students on leave, students in economically and socially disadvantaged areas, students from ethnic minority groups, students with disabilities, students with physical or intellectual developmental delays, orphaned students without support, students returning from abroad, and other cases as prescribed by law.
Therefore, based on the above regulations, the age to enter grade one is 6 years old, and from grade one to grade five, the age is calculated in years. Currently, your child has just returned from abroad to live and study in Vietnam. Therefore, they can enter grade one at the age of 8.

Regarding the responsibilities of primary school students in Vietnam
- Study and train according to the educational plan and school regulations; have self-motivation in learning and training to develop comprehensive qualities and abilities according to the objectives of the primary education program.
- Fulfill the tasks of learning fully and effectively; know how to self-study under the guidance of teachers; actively participate in experiential activities, apply learned knowledge to practical life; train the body and maintain personal hygiene.
- Be filial to parents, grandparents; show respect and politeness to teachers and elders; unite, love, and help friends, younger siblings, the elderly, people with disabilities, and those in difficult circumstances.
- Observe school rules, protect school property and public places; comply with traffic safety regulations; maintain cleanliness and protect the environment.
- Contribute to the construction, preservation, and promotion of the traditions of the school and the local community.
