Can household businesses in Vietnam register for multiple industries and trades?

Based on Article 89 of Decree 01/2021/ND-CP regulating the business sectors and occupations of household businesses:

Article 89. Business sectors and occupations of household businesses

1. When registering for establishment or changing the registration content of a household business, the household business records the business sectors and occupations on the Application for Household Business Registration and the Notice of Change of Household Business Registration Content. The district-level business registration authority records information about the business sectors and occupations on the Household Business Registration Certificate.

2. Household businesses are entitled to operate in conditional investment business sectors and occupations once they meet the conditions prescribed by law and must ensure they meet those conditions throughout their operation. State management of conditional investment business sectors and occupations and inspection of compliance with operating conditions of household businesses fall within the jurisdiction of specialized authorities according to sector-specific legal regulations.

3. In the event that the district-level business registration authority receives a document from a competent authority indicating that a household business is operating in a conditional investment business sector or occupation without meeting the prescribed conditions, the district-level business registration authority issues a Notice requiring the household business to temporarily cease operations in the conditional investment business sector or occupation and simultaneously notifies the competent state authority for handling according to the law.

According to the above regulations, a household business can register for sectors and occupations not prohibited by law, and there is no specified maximum number of sectors and occupations that can be registered. Therefore, household businesses can register multiple sectors and occupations as long as they comply with legal provisions.

Based on Article 6 of the Investment Law 2020 (supplemented by Clause 2, Article 2 of the Law Amending the Law on Planning, the Law on Investment, the Law on Investment in the form of Public-Private Partnership, and the Law on Bidding 2024) regulating prohibited investment business sectors and occupations:

Article 6. Prohibited investment business sectors and occupations

1. The following business investment activities are prohibited:

a) Trading in narcotic substances specified in Appendix I of this Law;

b) Trading in certain chemicals, minerals specified in Appendix II of this Law;

c) Trading in specimens of wild plants and animals of species from nature as specified in Appendix I of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora; specimens of Group I endangered, rare wild plants and animals from nature specified in Appendix III of this Law;

d) Prostitution businesses;

đ) Human trafficking, trading in human tissues, bodies, human body parts, human fetuses;

e) Business activities related to human cloning;

What are regulations on the name of a household business in Vietnam?

Based on Article 88 of Decree 01/2021/ND-CP regulating the name of household businesses:

- A household business has its own name. The name of the household business consists of two elements in the following order:

+ The phrase "Household Business";

+ The distinct name of the household business.

+ The distinct name can be written using letters in the Vietnamese alphabet, the letters F, J, Z, W, and can include numbers, symbols.

- It is prohibited to use words and symbols that violate historical, cultural, ethical, and traditional values of the nation to set the distinct name for a household business.

- Household businesses are not allowed to use the phrases "company" or "enterprise" to name the household business.

- The distinct name of a household business must not be identical to the distinct name of an already registered household business within the district jurisdiction.
