What are the membership criteria for the Vietnam Jurists Association?
According to Article 7 of the Charter of the Vietnam Jurists Association, issued together with the Decision 770/QD-TTg in 2020, the membership criteria are as follows:
Membership Criteria:
Vietnamese citizens who have legal capacity, possess good moral character, hold a bachelor's degree in law or have a bachelor's degree in another field but have worked in legal affairs for a minimum of three years, and agree to abide by the Association's Charter, are eligible to join the Association.
Vietnamese citizens who do not meet the requirements or criteria to become full members but have made contributions to the Association and voluntarily apply for membership may be recognized as honorary members of the Association.
Honorary members enjoy the rights and obligations of full members, except for the right to vote on Association issues and the right to participate in elections, nominations, and appointments to the Association's leadership, leadership positions, and Inspection Board.
Therefore, Vietnamese citizens who wish to join the Vietnam Jurists Association need to meet the following criteria:
- Have legal capacity.
- Possess good moral character.
- Hold a bachelor's degree in law or have a bachelor's degree in another field but have worked in legal affairs for a minimum of three years.
- Agree to abide by the Association's Charter.

What are the duties of the Vietnam Jurists Association?
According to Article 5 of the Charter of the Vietnam Jurists Association, issued together with the Decision 770/QD-TTg in 2020, the Vietnam Jurists Association has the following duties:
- Adhere to the Vietnam Communist Party's viewpoints, guidelines, policies, and laws of the State, as well as the Association's Charter.
- Gather, unite, and leverage the role of members; organize and coordinate activities among members in line with the principles and objectives of the Association, building a politically, ideologically, organizationally, and professionally strong Association.
- Participate in policy and legal development, legal research; engage in social criticism and supervision; participate in the resolution of complaints and disputes as requested by state agencies.
- Promote legal education, enhance legal awareness among members, officials, public employees, and the people.
- Provide legal advice, legal assistance, and mediation at the grassroots level; advise on the resolution of complaints and legal disputes outside the state mechanisms as regulated by law.
- Develop and implement programs, projects for legal education, and legal assistance in accordance with the Vietnam Communist Party's socialization policy, the State, and other programs and projects as required by state agencies.
- Participate in training and professional development; select certain judicial titles, people's adjudicators; engage in administrative reform, judicial reform, crime prevention, and other judicial activities as regulated by law.
- Coordinate with relevant organizations to fulfill the Association's tasks and fulfill the obligations of members of the Vietnam Fatherland Front.
- Enhance international cooperation, expand and improve the effectiveness of cooperation between the Vietnam Jurists Association and progressive legal organizations in the region and the world as regulated by law; mobilize Vietnamese Jurists living abroad to unite and contribute to the country's development.
- Engage in people-to-people diplomacy in accordance with the Vietnam Communist Party's guidelines and policies, and the laws of the State.
- Publish and distribute books, magazines, and other legal publications in line with the requirements of the Association's activities as regulated by law.
- Establish and implement a code of ethics for members of the Vietnam Jurists Association in accordance with the provisions of the law and the Association's Charter.
- Manage and use the assets and finances of the Association in accordance with the provisions of the law and the Association's Charter.
- Carry out other tasks as required by competent authorities.
What are the powers of the Vietnam Jurists Association?
According to Article 6 of the Charter of the Vietnam Jurists Association, issued together with the Decision 770/QD-TTg in 2020, the Vietnam Jurists Association has the following powers:
- Widely disseminate the principles, objectives, and duties of the Association.
- Represent members in internal and external relations related to the functions and tasks of the Association; make recommendations to competent state agencies on issues related to the development of the Association and its areas of activity; on the construction and enforcement of laws and other related issues.
- Reflect the aspirations and wishes of Vietnamese lawyers to the Vietnam Communist Party and the State; provide training, capacity building, and enhance legal knowledge and professional ethics for members; motivate and care for the interests of members; protect the legitimate rights and interests of members; resolve complaints and denunciations of members as regulated by law and the Association's Charter.
- Provide services related to the areas of activity of the Association as regulated by law.
- Establish organizations and units under the Association as regulated by law and the Association's Charter.
- Receive funding from the Association based on membership fees and other legal sources as regulated by law.
- Receive legitimate funding from organizations and individuals inside and outside the country as regulated by law.
- Join corresponding international organizations and sign and implement international agreements as regulated by law.
