Are only children exempt from military service in Vietnam?

Based on Clause 2, Article 41 Law on Military Service 2015 stipulating the deferment and exemption from military enrollment:

Article 41. Deferment and exemption from military enrollment

2. Exemptions from military enrollment are granted to the following citizens:

a) Sons of martyrs, sons of first-class wounded soldiers;

b) One brother of a martyr;

c) One child of a second-class wounded soldier; one child of an invalid with a labor ability reduction of 81% or more; one child of a person affected by Agent Orange with a labor ability reduction of 81% or more;

d) Persons engaged in cryptographic work who are not military personnel or people's police;

dd) Officials and public employees, youth volunteers mobilized to work in areas with extremely difficult socio-economic conditions according to legal regulations for 24 months or more.

Based on Article 14 of the Law on Military Service 2015 defining exemptions from military service registration:

Article 14. Subjects exempted from military service registration

Persons with disabilities, those suffering from serious, mental, or chronic diseases as prescribed by law.

According to the above regulations, an only son is not automatically exempted from military service in 2025 but is only exempted if he falls into the categories for military enrollment exemption or military service registration exemption.

If one does not fall into the exempt categories and simultaneously meets the criteria for military enrollment such as age, cultural, political, health standards, etc., as specified in Article 4 of Circular 148/2018/TT-BQP, the only son will still have to perform military service like other citizens.
