What are cases of revocation of ID cards in Vietnam?
According to Article 29 of the Law on Identification 2023 regulating the revocation and seizure of ID cards in Vietnam:
Article 29. Revocation and seizure of ID cards
1. ID cards are revoked in the following cases:
a) Citizens are deprived of Vietnamese nationality, renounce Vietnamese nationality, or have their decisions on granting Vietnamese nationality annulled;
b) The ID card is issued incorrectly;
c) The ID card has been erased or altered.
2. ID cards are retained in the following cases:
a) Individuals undergoing judicial education measures at reformatory schools; individuals undergoing administrative handling measures at reformatory schools, compulsory education institutions, or compulsory rehabilitation centers;
b) Individuals who are detained, on remand, or serving imprisonment sentences.

Can the ID card be used in place of papers of entry and exit in Vietnam?
According to Article 20 of the Law on Identification 2023 regulating the uses of the ID card in Vietnam:
Article 20. Uses of the ID card
- The ID card serves as proof of identity and other integrated information of the cardholder for administrative procedures, public services, transactions, and other activities within the territory of Vietnam.
- The ID card can be used as a travel document in cases where the Socialist Republic of Vietnam and a foreign country have signed an agreement or international treaty allowing the citizens of the signatory countries to use the ID card as a travel document within the territory of each other.
- The ID card or personal identification number is used by agencies, organizations, and individuals to verify the cardholder's information in the National Population Database, other national databases, and specialized databases as prescribed by law.
In cases where the cardholder is required to present the ID card at the request of an authorized agency, organization, or individual, these entities cannot request the cardholder to present any papers or provide any information already printed or integrated into the ID card; in cases where the information has changed compared to the information on the ID card, the cardholder must present legal documents proving the updated information.

What are cases of replacement of ID cards in Vietnam?
According to Clause 1, Article 24 of the Law on Identification 2023 regulating the cases of replacement and re-issuance of ID cards:
Article 24. Cases of reissuing and replacing ID cards
1. Cases of reissuing ID cards include:
a) The cases specified in Clause 1, Article 21 of this Law;
b) Change or correction of the information regarding surname, middle name, given name; date, month, year of birth;
c) Change in facial features; addition of information about facial images, fingerprints; determination of gender or gender reassignment as prescribed by law;
d) Errors in the information printed on the ID card;
dd) At the request of the cardholder when the information on the ID card changes due to administrative unit adjustments;
e) Reissuing personal identification number;
g) Upon the request of the cardholder.

Thus, citizens are to reissue their ID cards in the following cases:
- Vietnamese citizens who have been issued ID cards must go through the reissuance procedure when turning 14, 25, 40, and 60 years old.
