What are sports weapons according to the law in Vietnam?

Pursuant to Clause 5, Article 2 of the Law on Management and Use of Weapons, Explosives, and Support Tools 2024, sports weapons include:

- Air rifles, rifles using explosive bullets, air pistols, pistols firing explosive bullets, paintball guns, clay pigeon shooting guns, and the ammunition used for these types of guns that belong to the list issued by the Minister of Public Security, used for training and sports competition.

- Swords, spears, lances, machetes, bayonets, broadswords, nunchakus, knuckleduster, maces, bows, crossbows, throwing stars that belong to the list issued by the Minister of Public Security, used for training and sports competition.

- Basic components of air rifles, rifles using explosive bullets, air pistols, pistols firing explosive bullets, paintball guns, clay pigeon shooting guns, ammunition used for these guns that belong to the list issued by the Minister of Public Security, including: gun body, barrel, trigger mechanism, bolt mechanism, firing pin.

Which weapons are included in the List of sports weapons in Vietnam from January 1, 2025?

Based on Article 6 of Circular 75/2024/TT-BCA regulating the list of military weapons, sports weapons, rudimentary weapons, support tools, and high-lethality knives:

Article 6. Lists of military weapons, sports weapons, rudimentary weapons, support tools, high-lethality knives

  1. The annex of this Circular promulgates the list of military weapons, sports weapons, rudimentary weapons, support tools, high-lethality knives, including:

a) Annex 1: List of military weapons specified at Point b, Clause 2, Article 2 of the Law on Management and Use of Weapons, Explosives, and Support Tools;

b) Annex 2: List of sports weapons as specified at Point a, Clause 5, Article 2 of the Law on Management and Use of Weapons, Explosives, and Support Tools;

c) Annex 3: List of rudimentary weapons specified at Point a, Clause 4, Article 2 of the Law on Management and Use of Weapons, Explosives, and Support Tools;

d) Annex 4: List of support tools specified at Point a and Point b, Clause 11, Article 2 of the Law on Management and Use of Weapons, Explosives, and Support Tools;

dd) Annex 5: List of high-lethality knives specified at Clause 6, Article 2 of the Law on Management and Use of Weapons, Explosives, and Support Tools.

1 Air rifles

- Basic structure and key features include: Guns using compressed air tanks, pneumatic or piston, or spring-powered propulsion; gun body; metal or other material barrel, length 45cm or more, caliber 4.5mm; trigger mechanism; pressure regulator, compressed air tank, pneumatic or piston, spring system.

- Operating principle: When the trigger is pressed, gas or compressed air is partially released through a pressure valve system or uses piston spring pressure to propel the bullet out of the barrel.

2 Rifles firing explosive bullets

- Basic structure and key features include: Gun body; metal or other material barrel, length 45cm or more, caliber 5.6mm; firing pin; trigger mechanism.

- Operating principle: When the trigger is pressed, the firing pin triggers an explosive primer that ignites the propellant to push the bullet out of the barrel.

3 Air pistols

- Basic structure and key features include: Guns using compressed air tanks, pneumatic; gun body; metal or other material barrel, length below 45cm, caliber 4.5mm; pressure regulator, compressed air tank, pneumatic; trigger mechanism.

- Operating principle: When the trigger is pressed, gas or compressed air is partially released through a pressure valve system to propel the bullet out of the barrel.

4 Pistols firing explosive bullets

- Basic structure and key features include: Gun body; metal or other material barrel, length below 45cm, caliber 5.6mm; firing pin; trigger mechanism.

- Operating principle: When the trigger is pressed, the firing pin triggers an explosive primer that ignites the propellant to push the bullet out of the barrel.

5 Clay pigeon shooting guns

- Basic structure and key features include: Gun body; metal or other material barrel, double-barrel, length 70cm or more, caliber 12mm; firing pin; trigger mechanism.

- Operating principle: When the trigger is pressed, the firing pin triggers an explosive primer that ignites the propellant to push the bullet out of the barrel.

6 Paintball guns

- Basic structure and key features include: Gun body; metal or other material barrel, various lengths and calibers; pressure regulator, compressed air tank, pneumatic; trigger mechanism.

- Operating principle: When the trigger is pressed, gas or compressed air is partially released through a pressure valve system to propel the bullet out of the barrel.

7 Ammunition used for sports guns

- Lead bullets: Mushroom-shaped.

- Explosive bullets: Metal or other material casing, primer, propellant; bullet head (if available).

- Paint bullets: Capsule-shaped, colorful, thin plastic casing, containing powder or liquid and dye.

- Clay pigeon shooting bullets: Metal or other material casing, primer, propellant; bullet head containing small lead or metal pellets.

 

[2] Other Sports Weapons include rudimentary weapons equipped and used for training and sports competition.

Who is eligible to be equipped with sport weapons in Vietnam?

According to Article 9 of Circular 75/2024/TT-BCA stipulating subjects eligible to be equipped with military weapons and support tools:

Article 9. Subjects Eligible to Be Equipped with Military Weapons, Explosives, and Support Tools

  1. Subjects eligible to be equipped with military weapons, support tools, include:

a) Departments, Commands under the Ministry of Public Security; academies, schools of the People's Public Security;

b) Provincial police;

c) Prisons, detention centers; compulsory education facilities, reformatory schools; Centers for training and professional development of the People's Public Security;

d) District police, district-level towns, cities under provinces, and cities under central authority (abbreviated as district-level police);

dd) Commune-level police.

  1. Subjects eligible to be equipped with sports weaponry include:

a) Academies, schools of the People's Public Security;

b) Centers for sports training and competition of the People's Public Security;

c) Centers for training and professional development of the People's Public Security that conduct sports training and competition.

Subjects eligible to be equipped with sports weapons include:

- Academies, schools of the People's Public Security

- Centers for sports training and competition of the People's Public Security

- Centers for training and professional development of the People's Public Security conducting sports training and competition.
