Evasion of Debt Can Be Punished by Up to 20 Years in Prison

Based on Clause 35, Article 1 of the Law amending the Criminal Code 2017 stipulating the Crime of abuse of trust to appropriate property as follows:

Anyone who commits one of the following acts of appropriating another person's property valued from 4,000,000 VND to under 50,000,000 VND, or under 4,000,000 VND but has been administratively sanctioned for the act of appropriating property, or has been convicted of this crime or one of the crimes specified in Articles 168, 169, 170, 171, 172, 173, 174, and 290 of this Code, not having their criminal records expunged and still committing violations, or if the property is the primary means of living for the victim and their family, shall be subject to non-custodial reform for up to 03 years or imprisonment from 06 months to 03 years:

- Committing the crime of appropriating property valued at 500,000,000 VND or more shall be subject to imprisonment from 12 years to 20 years.

Thus, according to the above regulation and the case you mentioned, if someone borrows money but absconds without paying, the borrower can be criminally prosecuted for the Crime of abuse of trust to appropriate property with a prison sentence of up to 20 years.
