Can a Teaching Assistant Grade Exams on Behalf of a Lecturer?
Are Teaching Assistants Allowed to Grade Exams on Behalf of Instructors?
Pursuant to Clause 1, Article 4 of Circular 40/2020/TT-BGDDT which stipulates the duties of teaching assistants as follows:
- Duties:
a) Assist lecturers (Grade III), senior lecturers (Grade II), and principal lecturers (Grade I) in teaching activities, including: preparing lectures, tutoring, guiding exercises, discussions, experiments, practice sessions, internships, and grading;
b) Engage in learning and training to enhance political theory, expertise, professional skills, and teaching methods; participate in practical activities to improve the quality of training and scientific research;
c) Participate in management tasks, Communist Party, and union activities; and perform other duties according to the organizational regulations, activities of public higher education institutions, and related legal provisions.
Thus, teaching assistants are only allowed to assist lecturers in teaching activities, including grading, but are not permitted to grade exams on behalf of lecturers.
Duties that University Lecturers Can Perform
According to Clause 1, Article 5 of Circular 40/2020/TT-BGDDT, the duties of lecturers are stipulated as follows:
- Duties:
a) Teach, guide, and grade projects, graduation theses; participate in teaching master's and doctoral programs and guide, assess master's theses, and doctoral dissertations if meeting the required standards;
b) Participate in the construction and development of training programs;
c) Lead or participate in the compilation of textbooks, reference books, monographs, manuals, and translate books and textbooks from foreign languages to Vietnamese (hereinafter referred to as training service books);
d) Organize and participate in scientific research activities; write and present scientific reports at conferences and scientific seminars; participate in evaluating institutional scientific research projects and student research projects; engage in international cooperation activities and ensure the quality of higher education;
d) Participate in class management, academic advisory tasks; guide discussions, practices, experiments, and internships;
e) Engage in learning and training to enhance political theory, expertise, professional skills, and teaching methods; participate in practical activities to improve the quality of training and scientific research;
g) Participate in management tasks, Communist Party, and union activities; and perform other duties according to the organizational regulations, activities of public higher education institutions, and related legal provisions.
