Pension for the Rank of Colonel
According to Article 9 of Decree 33/2016/ND-CP stipulating the monthly pension rate as follows:
- The monthly pension of military personnel, public security personnel, and those working in cipher organizations (hereinafter collectively referred to as employees) is calculated as:
Percentage of monthly pension entitlement * average monthly salary used for social insurance contributions.
- The percentage of monthly pension entitlement for employees eligible for pension benefits as stipulated in Clause 2, Article 54 of the Social Insurance Law is calculated as follows:
- Employees starting to receive monthly pension during the period from January 1, 2016, to before January 1, 2018, the monthly pension percentage is calculated as 45% corresponding to 15 years of social insurance contributions. From the 16th year onwards, an additional 2% per year for men and 3% per year for women; the maximum rate is 75%;
Example 25: Colonel Nguyen Van Ba, born in June 1969, enlisted in October 1986, retires on January 1, 2016, with 29 years and 3 months of social insurance contributions. The monthly pension percentage of Mr. Ba is calculated as follows:
- The first 15 years are calculated as 45%;
- From the 16th year to the 29th year is 14 years, added: 14 x 2% = 28%
- 3 months are calculated as the benefit rate of half a year of social insurance contributions: 0.5 x 2% = 1%;
- The total percentage is: 45% + 28% + 1% = 74%;
The monthly pension percentage of Mr. Ba is: 74%.
- Female employees starting to receive monthly pension from January 1, 2018, onwards, the monthly pension percentage is calculated as 45% corresponding to 15 years of social insurance contributions. From the 16th year onwards, an additional 2% per year; the maximum rate is 75%;
- Male employees starting to receive monthly pension from January 1, 2018, onwards, the monthly pension percentage is calculated as 45% corresponding to the number of years of social insurance contributions according to the table below. From the subsequent year onwards, an additional 2% per year; the maximum rate is 75%:

Example 28: Colonel Le Trung Kien, born in February 1970, enlisted in October 1988, retires on January 1, 2018, with 29 years and 3 months of social insurance contributions. The monthly pension percentage of Mr. Kien is calculated as follows:
- The first 16 years are calculated as 45%;
- From the 17th year to the 29th year is 13 years, added: 13 x 2% = 26%
- 3 months are calculated as the benefit rate of half a year of social insurance contributions: 0.5 x 2% = 1%;
- The total percentage is: 45% + 26% + 1% = 72%;
The monthly pension percentage of Mr. Kien is: 72%.
