In the early 1970s of the 20th century, the East-West detente trend emerged with negotiations between the two superpowers, the Soviet Union and the United States. The indicators of the East-West detente trend are as follows:

- On November 9, 1972, the two German states signed the Treaty on the Basis of Relations between East and West Germany in Bonn, easing the tension in Europe.

- In 1972, the Soviet Union and the United States agreed to limit strategic arms and signed the ABM Treaty (Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty) and SALT-1 (Strategic Arms Limitation Talks Agreement), marking the establishment of a military and strategic nuclear weapons balance between the two powers.

- In August 1975, 33 European countries along with the United States and Canada signed the Helsinki Accords, reaffirming principles in international relations and cooperation among countries, creating a mechanism to resolve issues related to peace and security in Europe.

- From 1985, the Soviet and American leaders increased meetings and signed numerous documents on economic, scientific, and technical cooperation, emphasizing dismantling European intermediate-range missiles, reducing strategic arms, and limiting the arms race.
