In Vietnam, what is the age of students entering 2nd Grade in 2024?

Under Article 33 of the Primary School Charter issued with Circular 28/2020/TT-BGDDT on the age of primary school students in Vietnam:

Age of Primary School Students

1. The age for entering first grade is 06 years and is calculated by year. Children with disabilities, slow physical or intellectual development, children in especially disadvantaged areas, children of ethnic minorities, orphaned children without a refuge, children returning from abroad, children of foreigners studying and working in Vietnam may enter first grade at an older age than prescribed, but not more than 03 years. Cases where children start first grade more than 03 years beyond the prescribed age will be decided by the Head of the Department of Education and Training.

2. Primary school students who study at an older age than the prescribed age include those subject to grade retention, students in especially disadvantaged areas, students of ethnic minorities, students with disabilities, students with slow physical or intellectual development, orphaned children without a refuge, children returning from abroad, and other cases as stipulated by law.

Thus, typically, the age for students entering first grade is 06 years of age and is calculated annually. Therefore, the age of students entering 2nd Grade will be 7.

However, first-grade students may enter first grade at an older age than the prescribed age, but not more than 03 years in certain cases. Therefore, the age of entering 2nd Grade for these students will be calculated annually based on the previous entrance age.

Under Section 3 of the General Education Program for Literature issued with Circular 32/2018/TT-BGDDT, the 2nd-grade Vietnamese Language curriculum contributes to the following overall goals:

- Forming and developing essential qualities for students: patriotism, empathy, diligence, honesty, and responsibility; nurturing the soul, shaping personality, and developing individuality.

Helping students explore themselves and the world around them, understanding people, having a rich spiritual life, having a humane perspective on life and behavior; loving the Vietnamese language and literature; being aware of the roots and identity of the nation, contributing to preserving and developing Vietnamese cultural values; having the spirit of absorbing the quintessence of human culture and the ability to integrate internationally.

- Contributing to helping students develop general competencies: autonomy and self-study, communication and collaboration, problem-solving, and creativity.

Especially, the Literature subject (Vietnamese Language) helps students develop language competency and literary competency: practicing reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills; having foundational general knowledge about Vietnamese language and literature, developing figurative thinking and logical thinking, contributing to forming the basic education of a cultured person; knowing how to create common texts; knowing how to receive and evaluate literary texts specifically, as well as communicative products and aesthetic values in general in life.
