Decree 43/2020/ND-CP stipulating the execution of the death penalty by lethal injection was issued by the Government of Vietnam on April 08, 2020.

According to Decree 43/2020/ND-CP, the provincial-level criminal enforcement agencies have the following responsibilities in executing death penalties by lethal injection, specifically:
- Participate in the Death Penalty Execution Council.
- Assist the Director of Provincial Police in developing plans, strategies, cost estimates, task allocations, organizing, mobilizing, and arranging forces, means, and other facilities to ensure absolute safety for the execution of death penalties.
- Establish a Death Penalty Execution Team to directly perform the execution, including a Team Leader, forensic doctor, and various groups: escorting, vein identification, drug mixing, button pressing, and injection machine operation.
- Receive individuals sentenced to death from the detention center to escort them to the execution site.
- Carry out procedures for family members or lawful representatives of the executed individual to receive the body, ashes, or remains of the executed individual for burial (or repatriation for burial if the individual is a foreigner).
- Perform procedures to place the body in preservation at a hospital or funeral company in case the criminal enforcement agency does not have storage facilities.
- Coordinate with the district- and communal-level People's Committees to conduct death registration procedures; organize burial, sketch a grave map, and place a gravestone on the grave of the executed individual; notify their family members or lawful representatives.
- Coordinate with relevant diplomatic, border, health, and other agencies to carry out procedures to repatriate the body, ashes, or remains out of the Vietnamese territory.
- Report the result of the death penalty execution to the Detention Management Agency under the Ministry of Public Security.
- Manage, store, and preserve execution files in accordance with regulations.
- Implement other regulations regarding death penalty execution as stipulated by law.
Responsibilities of the district-level police where the death penalty is executed:
- Develop plans to ensure security and order at the execution site.
- Detect, prevent, and handle violations of law at the execution area.
- Carry out other tasks as directed by the Director of Provincial Police.
