New regulations on academic duration of international students in Vietnam

From February 08, 2019, academic duration of international students in Vietnam shall comply with regulations of Circular No. 30/2018/TT-BGDĐT of the Ministry of Education and Training of Vietnam, specifically as follows:

1. Academic duration required to complete a training program to gain a qualification

- Academic duration specific to educational grades and levels shall be subject to the Law on Education, the Law on Higher Education and other legislative documents concerned;

- Duration required to complete a refresher course designed to improve professional skills and knowledge, or an internship course taken by an intern, shall be subject to agreements between Vietnam and the sending partner.

2. Changes in an academic duration

- International students may be allowed to accelerate their learning period on condition that they have to complete all study load required in their training programs in accordance with regulations in force;

- If agreement-based international students wish to extend the learning and research duration to complete training programs, including the period of participation in Vietnamese-language preparatory courses, they must obtain permission from the sending partner and consent from heads of educational institutions where these students are learning in writing;

- As regards non-agreement international students, extension of the academic duration shall be subject to terms and conditions of training undertakings and contracts with receiving educational institutions.

3. Temporary intermission

- During the learning period, agreement-based international students may take an intermission lasting 12 month at maximum on sound and sufficient grounds after obtaining approval from the sending partner and consent from the receiving educational institution in writing;

- The intermission allowed for non-agreement international students shall be subject to training undertakings and contracts with educational institutions.
