What is the scope of healthcare activities for Village health workers in Vietnam?

According to the regulations stated in Article 4, Clause 2 of Circular 27/2023/TT-BYT regarding the scope of healthcare activities for Village health workers, it includes the following:

(1) For residents in the village:

- Identifying danger signs, providing initial first aid in emergency and accident situations, and participating in emergency transfers.

- Providing initial management and care for common symptoms and illnesses in the community, and referring to health facilities when necessary. This includes cough, fever, nasal congestion, headache, abdominal pain, upper respiratory infections, acute diarrhea, red eyes, flu, dengue fever, rash, allergic dermatitis, measles, mumps, hand-foot-mouth disease, and other common diseases based on the characteristics of each locality.

- Providing guidance and advice on healthcare measures and disease prevention in the community.

- Participating in the management, screening, counseling, and care for the elderly, people with disabilities, mental health issues, and non-communicable diseases such as hypertension, diabetes, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, bronchial asthma, and cancer.

(2) For mothers and children in the village:

- Providing care for pregnant women, detecting abnormal signs, providing initial management, and facilitating referrals for pregnant women, mothers, and newborns.

- Assisting in delivering babies for pregnant women who cannot reach healthcare facilities in time and notifying the commune health station.

- Providing guidance, counseling, monitoring, and care for mothers and newborns at home in the first 6 weeks after childbirth.

- Providing simple measures for monitoring and caring for child health, preventing and combating malnutrition in children under 16 years old, including weighing, measuring, measuring arm circumference, plotting growth charts for children under 5 years old, advising on breastfeeding and appropriate complementary feeding for children.

- Distributing iron/folic acid products for pregnant women, mothers, and products for prevention, treatment of malnutrition for children, following the guidance of the commune health station (if available), combined with guidance, monitoring at the household level.

(3) Efficient management and use of Village health kits, supporting the commune health station in instructing patients to use essential medications safely, reasonably, and effectively.

(4) The list of technical expertise for examining and treating patients by Village health workers is specified in Appendix 01 issued with Circular 27/2023/TT-BYT.
