Continuing to guide the vaccination against Covid-19 for children from 5 years old to under 12 years old across Vietnam?
In order to continue to guide and support the vaccination against Covid-19 for children from 5 years old to under 12 years old in localities across Vietnam, on June 21, 2022, the Ministry of Health of Vietnam issued Official Dispatch No. 3229/BYT-DP 2022 guidelines on vaccination for children aged 5 to under 12 years. According to this Official Dispatch, the Ministry of Health of Vietnam has based on the conclusions of the Advisory Council on the use of vaccines of the Ministry of Health of Vietnam to make the following recommendations to the Central Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology:
"1. The Central Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology, based on the manufacturer's instructions on using the COVID-19 vaccine and the conclusions of the Council at the meeting on June 13, 2022 to guide units and localities to implement the Administer the COVID-19 vaccine to children aged 5 to under 12 years according to the manufacturer's instructions with the appropriate age-appropriate dose.
2. Continue to guide and support localities and units to speed up the progress of vaccination against COVID-19 for children from 5 to under 12 years old to ensure safety and effectiveness.
The Ministry of Health shall notify the Central Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology to know and implement it."
Thus, the Vietnamese Central Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology needs to base on the instructions on the use of Covid-19 vaccines by relevant parties to guide localities in implementing Covid-19 vaccination for children from 5 years old to under 12 years old.

On May 20, 2022, the Department of Medical Examination and Treatment issued Official Dispatch 586/KCB-NV in 2022 guiding on strengthening the safety of vaccination against Covid-19 for children aged 5 years and older. under 12 years old with the following contents:
"1. Urging vaccination facilities to strictly comply with regulations on pre-vaccination screening for children according to Decision 2470/QD-BYT dated June 14, 2019 of the Minister of Health on Guidelines for medical examination and treatment. pre-vaccination screening and Decision No. 5002/QD-BYT dated October 29, 2021 on the promulgation of Guidelines for amending and supplementing the Guidelines for pre-vaccination screening for COVID-19 vaccine for children and professional guidance on troubleshooting after vaccination by the Ministry of Health.
2. Arrange a standing team for first aid, prepare enough equipment, emergency drugs, reserve emergency beds at medical examination and treatment establishments to be ready to support vaccination points and handle timely and referral for treatment of post-injection reactions.”
Accordingly, vaccination against Covid-19 for children from 5 years old to under 12 years old needs to strictly comply with regulations on immunization for children. Fully prepare emergency equipment and infrastructure to be ready to support vaccination points.
Vietnam will complete the Covid-19 vaccination for eligible children aged 5 to under 12 years in the second quarter of 2022?
According to Official Dispatch 3181/BYT-DP in 2022 of the Ministry of Health of Vietnam, guiding the booster dose of COVID-19 vaccine for children aged 12 to 17 years old, the contents are:
"1. Departments of Health of provinces, cities and units:
a) Continue expeditiously deploying the 3rd dose of COVID-19 vaccine for people aged 18 years and over, ensuring its completion in the second quarter of 2022 under the direction of the Government.
b) Accelerate the progress of vaccination against COVID-19 for children from 5 to under 12 years old, ensure safety and effectiveness, and complete the vaccination for eligible children in the second quarter of 2022 under the direction of the Ministry of Health. Government.
c) Give the child a booster dose (3rd dose) of COVID-19 vaccine:
- Subjects of injection: Children from 12 years old to 17 years old have had enough basic dose
- Vaccines used: Pfizer's vaccine has been approved by the Ministry of Health for use in this age group.
- Dosage: 0.3 ml dose is similar to the basic dose of people aged 12 years and older
- Gap: At least 5 months after the last dose of the basic dose
- People who already have COVID-19 should delay 3 months after contracting COVID-19 and ensure that the interval from the last dose of the basic dose is at least 5 months.
3. Implementation organization:
- The Department of Health advises the Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee to decide on the subjects of vaccination in accordance with the actual situation and requirements for epidemic prevention and control in the locality, to develop a plan and prepare the necessary conditions for the implementation of the vaccine. Declaring the 3rd injection for children from 12 years old to 17 years old.
- The Department of Health proposed the demand for the 3rd dose vaccine for children from 12 to 17 years old and sent it to the Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology, Pasteur Institute according to the management zone before June 20, 2022. The Institutes of Hygiene and Epidemiology, the Pasteur Institute will send it to the Central Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology before June 25, 2022 to synthesize and propose the number of vaccines.
- The Central Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology fully and promptly distributes COVID-19 vaccines to units and localities to deploy vaccination.
- Institutes of Hygiene and Epidemiology, Pasteur Institute: develop guidelines for booster doses of COVID-19 vaccine for children from 12 to 17 years old, organize training courses for vaccination facilities nationwide and provide technical guidance and support to localities in organizing vaccination implementation.
The Ministry of Health of Vietnam requests units to urgently implement the implementation./."
Thus, for children from 5 years old to under 12 years old who are eligible for vaccination, they must complete the vaccination in the second quarter of 2022 under the direction of the Government.
