Following the direction of the Ministry of Health in Official Dispatch 1228/VSDTTUY- TCQG dated May 30, 2022 on the implementation of a campaign to vaccinate against COVID-19 for children from 5 to under 12 years old, from April 2022 localities have received and used Moderna vaccine for children from 6 to under 12 years old. On May 26, 2022, the Central Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology issued a decision to distribute Pfizer vaccine to 63 provinces/cities for use in children from 5 to under 12 years old.
What are the contents in directing the use of Pfizer & Moderna in Vietnam vaccines for children from 5 to under 12 years old?
Pursuant to Official Letter 1228/VSDTTUY-TCQG dated May 30, 2022, providing for the effective use of COVID-19 vaccines and speeding up the immunization schedule for children from 5 to under 12 years old, the Institute of Hygiene The Central Epidemiology Department proposes the Department of Health and the Centers for Disease Control of the provinces/cities to direct and implement the following contents:
- Urgently receive the Pfizer vaccine for the children that have been allocated, and organize vaccination immediately after receiving the vaccine. Prioritize early deployment for children aged 5 to 6 years, and use Pfizer vaccine to vaccinate children from 6 to under 12 years old who have not been vaccinated against COVID-19. The National Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology will supply enough Pfizer vaccines for children according to the needs of the provinces/cities.
- For the Moderna in Vietnam vaccine that has been distributed at all levels, priority should be given to using the 2nd dose return injection for young subjects who have received 1 dose of Moderna vaccine. The National Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology will supply enough Moderna vaccine to return the second dose to children who have received the first dose according to the proposed needs of the provinces/cities. Anticipating the demand for Moderna vaccine in Vietnam, it is necessary to provide an additional 2nd dose for children who have received 1 dose of Moderna vaccine and the need for Pfizer vaccine should be sent to the Regional and National Immunization Program in writing before January 1. June 2022 to promptly distribute vaccines.

- For the Moderna vaccine, the only recommended amount of additional levels to give the 2nd dose for children who have received the 1st dose is the Moderna in Vietnam vaccine.
- For the Pfizer vaccine, it may be suggested that the first dose be given to all children aged 5 to under 12 years who have not received the first dose.
