Vietnam: How are livestocks infected with foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) handled?

This is a notable content specified in Circular No. 07/2016/TT-BNNPTNT of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural development of Vietnam on prevention and control of terrestrial animal disease epidemics.

According to Circular No. 07/2016/TT-BNNPTNT of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural development of Vietnam, the handling of livestocks infected with FMD is as follows:

- For buffaloes, cows, goats, sheep, deer, and elk: It is mandatory to cull dead livestock and livestock infected with the disease in the initial outbreak in the village, hamlet, or community, or livestock infected with a new FMD virus serotype or a serotype that has not appeared in the area within the past 10 years.

- For other livestock not mentioned above, culling is encouraged. If culling is not carried out, they can be slaughtered for consumption on-site or marked and kept locally according to the guidance of the local veterinary authority based on the incubation period of each species.

- For pigs: It is mandatory to cull all pigs infected with the disease in the outbreak to minimize the risk of disease spread. Healthy pigs within the same herd as the infected pigs should be isolated for monitoring.

- For regions and establishments that have been recognized as FMD-free, it is required to cull or slaughter infected livestock and handle the outbreak.

View relevant provisions at Circular No. 07/2016/TT-BNNPTNT of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural development of Vietnam, effective from July 15, 2016.
