What are the qualifications of the President of Vietnam?

Pursuant to the provisions of subsection 2.4, Section 2 of Regulation 214-QD/TW in 2020, the criteria for the title of State President include:

- Fully ensure the general standards of members of the Politburo and the Secretariat:

+ Fully meet the criteria of a member of the Central Executive Committee;

+ At the same time, it is necessary to have more standards: Truly typical and exemplary of the Central Committee in terms of political bravery, moral qualities, intelligence, fighting will, leadership and management capacity. , sense of organization and discipline; not influenced by interference, outside pressure and group interests.

+ Deep understanding of the situation of the country, region and the world; political sensitivity, economic acumen, deep understanding of society.

+ High sense of responsibility, ability to contribute ideas in making guidelines and policies and detect and propose practical problems to the Central Committee, Politburo, and Committees Secretary discussed and decided.

+ Be an official member of the Central Executive Committee for a full term or more;

Having experienced and successfully completed tasks in key leadership positions at the provincial level (Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee, City Party Committee; President of the People's Council, Chairman of the People's Committee of the province or city) or heads of committees, ministries, branches, Fatherland Front, socio-political organizations at the central level.

In case a member of the Politburo or the Secretariat works in the army, he/she must have held the position of presiding officer at the military zone level.

- Have the following qualities and capacities: Having high prestige, being the center of solidarity in the Central Committee, the Politburo, the whole Party and the people.

- Have outstanding and comprehensive capacity in all aspects of work, especially in the fields of internal affairs, external relations, security and defense; In-depth knowledge of the legal profession.

- Be the center for uniting social forces and ethnic communities at home and abroad.

- Be decisive in leading and operating according to assigned functions, tasks and powers.

- Have experienced and successfully completed tasks in the position of secretary of the provincial Party Committee, city party committee or head of a central committee, ministry or branch; join the Politburo for a full term or more; special cases decided by the Central Executive Committee.

How long is the term of the President of Vietnam?

Pursuant to Article 87 of the 2013 Constitution stipulates as follows:

Article 113
1. The People’s Council is the local state power body, representing the will, aspirations and right to mastery of the local People, shall be elected by the local People, and is responsible to the local People and state agencies at higher levels.
2. The People’s Council shall decide on local issues as prescribed by a law; and supervise the observance of the Constitution and law in its locality and the implementation of its own resolutions.

Accordingly, the term of the President will follow the term of the National Assembly.

Article 71 of the 2013 Constitution provides as follows:

Article 71
1. The term of the National Assembly is five years.
2. Sixty days before the expiration of the term of the National Assembly, a new National Assembly must be elected.
3. In special cases, the National Assembly may decide to shorten or extend its term, at the proposal of the Standing Committee of the National Assembly, if at least two-thirds of the total number of the National Assembly deputies vote for it. The extension of the term of the National Assembly must not exceed twelve months, except in wartime.

Thus, the term of the President will be 5 years.
