The scope of application of Vietnam Standard TCVN 11041-6:2018:
Vietnam Standard TCVN 11041-6:2018 specifies requirements for the organic cultivation, harvesting, processing, and preservation of Organic tea [Camellia sinensis (L.) Kuntze].
Vietnam Standard TCVN 11041-6:2018 is applied concurrently with TCVN 11041-1:2017 and TCVN 11041-2:2017.
What are the regulations on the harvesting of organic tea under Vietnam Standard TCVN 11041-6:2018?
Under the provisions of Clause 5.2 Vietnam Standard TCVN 11041-6:2018, the harvesting of organic tea in Vietnam shall be carried out as follows:
- The harvesting of tea should be done at the appropriate time. It is recommended to harvest tea by hand; If using a tea cutter, lead-free fuel must be used to avoid contamination into the tea and into the soil.
- Harvested tea must be stored in a suitable container, not compacted, not in a sealed bag, not allowed to wilt (except for materials used to process some products such as oolong tea), not mixed with objects and impurities.
- The time to bring tea to the processing place must not be greater than 8\ hours.
- Harvested tea must be carefully sorted to ensure that the green tea leaves are of even quality and remove unsuitable materials before processing the tea.
- There must be appropriate labels, clearly stating the type of tea, origin, time and method of harvesting.
- There must be no sources of pollution affecting the quality of organic products.
When transporting fresh bud tea, there must be physical separation between organic products and conventional products and they must not be shipped simultaneously.
- For naturally harvested tea, in addition to the above, it is necessary to comply with the regulations mentioned in 5.1.12 of TCVN 11041-2:2017.
What are the regulations on processing organic tea under Vietnam Standard TCVN 11041-6:2018?
According to Section 5.3 of Vietnam Standard TCVN 11041-6:2018, the processing of organic tea shall comply with Section 5.3 of TCVN 11041-1:2017 and the following requirements:
- Processing equipment (e.g. tea pans/plates), especially tea contact surfaces, must be safe before use.
During and after processing, measures should be taken to avoid mixing organic products with conventional products. Each bag containing organic tea must have an appropriate identification label, including information about when it was processed. Products must be stored in clean bags or in airtight containers, ensuring organic integrity.
- For the processing of marinated tea (e.g. lotus tea, jasmine tea), organic flowers must be used or converted to organic.
- Do not use synthetic additives and synthetic flavorings.
- For other additives, non-organic ingredients can be used, but must not exceed 5 % of the total mass and not be genetically modified ingredients. If these materials are available in organic form, organic form must be used.
What are the general requirements for pest management under Vietnam Standard TCVN 11041-6:2018?
In Section 5.1.10.1, Vietnam Standard TCVN 11041-6:2018, the general requirements for pest management in Vietnam are as follows:
- Pest control measures must be taken. The balance of natural enemies relative to pest populations and the health of tea plants should be considered before using naturally produced or permissible substances for pest control as outlined in Table A.2 of TCVN 11041-2:2017.
- To control harmful organisms, it is necessary to apply individually or in combination the following measures:
- Use tea varieties that are resistant to pests and diseases and suitable to the ecological conditions of specific tea growing areas;
- Apply appropriate farming practices such as tillage, keeping appropriate distance between tea rows, changing cutting periods, collecting tea in several batches, tight harvesting/regular harvesting of buds that meet the harvesting criteria [tea dispersion has 30% of buds meeting the harvesting criteria, avoiding too long harvesting distances that will create opportunities for pests (e.g. mosquito bugs, thrips, green leafhoppers lay eggs); maintaining soil fertility and nutrient balance as well as water management for healthy tea plant growth; combine priming and deep plowing in the tea garden in late autumn to reduce the number of scale-winged caterpillars during winter; clean the deciduous soil area in between the tea rows, prevent and treat pests and diseases in the topsoil.
- Use physical measures such as cleaning tea gardens to remove pathogens and weeds; fill them with pupal soil; use rackets, sticky traps, light traps to catch insect pests;
- Use of biological measures: using biological bait traps, free-range raising and protecting natural enemies, planting lure or repellent plants, using microorganisms and probiotics mentioned in Table A.2 of TCVN 11041-2:2017 as well as other natural plant products (for example The product contains natural pyrethrum, extracts from plants such as peppers, neem leaves or seeds, tobacco stems, pipe tobacco).
- If the measures mentioned in 5.1.10.2 to 5.1.10.5 are unable to protect tea plants against outbreaks of serious diseases and harmful organisms, the substances mentioned in Table A.2 of TCVN 11041-2:2017 may be used.
