What are the differences between priority and non-priority road signs in Vietnam?

Pursuant to Clause 3.6, Article 3 Chapter 1 of Vietnam National Technical Regulation 41:2019/BGTVT, priority road means a road which is sign-posted as the priority road and on which moving vehicles are given way by those approaching from other directions when passing intersections, is placed the priority road sign.

At the same time, according to Clause 3.8, Article 3, Chapter 1 of Vietnam National Technical Regulation 41:2019/BGTVT, a non-priority road is an intersection at the same level as the priority road.

According to Article 32 Chapter 1 of Vietnam National Technical Regulation 41:2019/BGTVT, the priority crossroad sign is denoted W.208. This is one of the signs in the group of dangerous and warning signs, valid for signaling on the lanes of the direction of traffic.

Identifying characteristics: the sign that intersects the priority line has an equilateral triangle shape, 3 rounded peaks, one horizontal edge and the corresponding peak pointing downwards. Illustrated in the following figure:

According to Article 32 Chapter 1 of Vietnam National Technical Regulation 41:2019/BGTVT, the sign of intersection with non-priority road (branch line) is denoted W.207 (a,b,c,d,e,f,g,h,i,k,l).

What should the driver do when encountering a priority crossroad sign in Vietnam?

Pursuant to the provisions of Vietnam National Technical Regulation 41:2019/BGTVT, the sign W.208 “priority crossroad sign” is arranged on all branches of roads intersecting with priority road sections at intersections. Specifically:

- In densely populated areas: Place directly in front of the priority crossroad signs.

- Outside densely populated areas: Depending on the distance to be placed far or near the priority crossroad, additional signboard S.502 "Distance to the signal object" is installed.

What is the penalty for failing to comply with the priority crossroad sign in Vietnam?

Pursuant to the provisions of Articles 5, 6, and 7 of Decree 100/2019/ND-CP (amended and supplemented by Decree 123/2021/ND-CP) stipulating penalties for acts Failure to comply with the priority crossroad sign:

* For cars:

- A fine ranging from VND 800,000 to VND 1,000,000 (based on Point n, Clause 3, Article 5 of Decree 100/2019/ND-CP).

- In case of causing an accident: Deprivation of driving license from 02 months to 04 months (based on point c, clause 11 Article 5 of Decree 100/2019/ND-CP)

* For motorbikes:

- A fine ranging from VND 300,000 to VND 400,000 (according to Point e, Clause 2, Article 6 of Decree 100/2019/ND-CP, some phrases have been replaced by Point k, Clause 34, Article 2 of Decree 123/2021/ND -CP)

- In case of causing an accident: Deprivation of driving license from 02 months - 04 months (based on point c, clause 10, Article 6 of Decree 100/2019/ND-CP)

* For special-use motorcycles, tractors:

- A fine ranging from VND 400,000 to VND 600,000 (based on Point dd, Clause 3, Article 7 of Decree 100/2019/ND-CP).

- In case of accident: Deprive driver's license (tractor), certificate of training in law knowledge on road traffic (special-use motorbike) from 02 months to 04 months (based on point b, clause 10). Article 7 Decree 100/2019/ND-CP).

* For bicycles, motorbikes (including electric bicycles):

- A fine of from 80,000 VND to 100,000 VND for violations. (Point n, Clause 1, Article 8 of Decree 100/2019/ND-CP)
