Pursuant to the timetable for the 2023-2024 academic year issued by the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee along with Decision 3260/QD-UBND 2023, the second semester of the 2023-2024 academic year will take place from January 15 to May 25.
The closing ceremony for preschool, primary, lower secondary, and upper secondary school levels will occur from May 26 to May 31.
Therefore, depending on the closing ceremony schedule of each school, students in Ho Chi Minh City will have their summer break starting from May 26 at the earliest.
During the summer break, districts and municipalities will conduct the enrollment.
The entrance exam for grade 10 in Ho Chi Minh City will take place on June 6 and 7. Candidates will participate in three compulsory subjects: Literature, Mathematics, and Foreign Language. Those who choose specialized or combined subjects will also take additional specialized or combined papers.
Meanwhile, the Vietnam high school graduation exam will be held on June 26, 27, 28, and 29, 2024. On June 26, candidates will go through examination procedures, and the actual exams will be conducted on June 27 and 28. June 29 will serve as a backup examination day.

What are the methods for assessing primary school students in Vietnam?
Pursuant to Clause 2, Article 5, Regulations on evaluation of elementary school students issued together with Circular 27/2020/TT-BGDDT, methods for assessing primary school students include:
- Assessment by observation: Teachers monitor and listen to students when teaching in classes, employ observation cards, examination boards and records of student's behaviors as proof for assessment of studying and training processes of students.
- Assessment by academic records, products and activities of students: Teachers provide feedback and assessment regarding products and activity results of students thereby assessing students based on relevant assessment criteria.
- Assessment by communication: Teachers discuss with students in form of questions and answers to collect information and promptly provide comment, remedial measures.
- Assessment by writing: Teachers employ tests consisting of questions and exercises designed according to levels and requirements to be achieved of the program in form of multiple-choice questions and writing tests to assess level of completion for academic assessment criteria.
How to calculate the semester and overall average grades for lower secondary and upper secondary school students in Vietnam?
The subject average grade is a statistical number used to assess the academic performance in subjects that are assessed using numerical grades.
Pursuant to Article 10 of the Regulation on the Assessment and Classification of Lower Secondary School Students and Upper Secondary School Students issued with Circular 58/2011/TT-BGDDT, amended by Clause 5 of Article 1 of Circular 26/2020/TT-BGDDT and Article 9 of Circular 22/2021/TT-BGDDT, the calculation of the semester and overall average grades for middle and high school students is as follows:
(1) Calculation of the semester average grade:
The semester average grade (abbreviated as ĐTBmhk) is the average of test scores, regular assessments, mid-term test scores, and end-of-term test scores.
Where:
- TDDGtx: Total score of regular assessments (oral tests, 15-minute tests)
- DDGgk: Mid-term test score
- DDGck: End-of-term test score
- DDGtx: Number of regular assessment scores.
(2) Calculation of the overall average grade:
The overall average grade is the average of the first-semester average grade and the second-semester average grade (the second-semester average grade is multiplied by a factor of 2).
Where:
DTBmon: Overall average grade
DTBmhkI: First-semester average grade
DTBmhkII: Second-semester average grade
Both the semester average grade and the overall average grade can be whole numbers or decimal numbers rounded to the first decimal place.
How to assess learning results via both feedback and scores for lower secondary and upper secondary school students in Vietnam?
Pursuant to Article 9 of Circular 22/2021/TT-BGDDT, for subjects assessed via both feedback and scores, DTBmhk is used to assess learning results of a student in each semester while DTBmcn is used to assess learning results of a student in the entire school year. Learning results of a student in each semester and in the entire school year shall be assessed by one of 4 categories: Excellent, Good, Qualified, Unqualified.
(1) Excellent:
- All subjects assessed with feedback are placed in Qualified category.
- All subjects assessed by both feedback and scores have minimum scores of 6.5 for DTBmhk and DTBmcn with 6 subjects among which have minimum scores of 8.0 for DTBmhk and DTBmcn.
(2) Good:
- All subjects assessed with feedback are placed in Qualified category.
- All subjects assessed by both feedback and scores have minimum scores of 5.0 for DTBmhk and DTBmcn with 6 subjects among which have minimum scores of 6.5 for DTBmhk and DTBmcn.
(3) Qualified:
- Have no more than 1 subject assessed via feedback placed in Unqualified category.
- At least 6 subjects assessed by both feedback and scores have minimum scores of 5.0 for DTBmhk and DTBmcn with 0 subjects have scores lower than 3.4 for DTBmhk and DTBmcn.
(4) Unqualified: Remaining cases.
