What is the Aptis certificate? What is the structure of the Aptis certificate exam?

Aptis is a modern and flexible English language test based on the latest research in English language assessment by the British Council, a reputable organization with over 70 years of experience in English language testing worldwide.

The Aptis exam can assess proficiency in all four language skills - Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing. The exam also includes a Grammar and Vocabulary section. The design of the Aptis exam meets the diverse needs of organizations (employers, training institutions, etc.) and individuals worldwide.

Aptis results are directly converted to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) and are compatible with Vietnam's 6-level Foreign Language Proficiency Framework. It assesses all levels from A1, A2, B1, B2 to C1 and C2.

The structure of the Aptis certificate exam in 2024 is as follows:

The Aptis exam consists of a mandatory Grammar and Vocabulary section, and four language skills: Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing. Candidates will complete a mandatory Grammar and Vocabulary test and choose from selected English language skill sections.

Candidate-friendly exam format:

- The Aptis exam assesses the use of English language skills through the Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing sections, and the Grammar and Vocabulary test is conducted on a computer, making it extremely convenient and easy to use.

- The Speaking test is recorded directly through the computer, reducing the stress, shyness, and confusion of candidates when having to interact directly with examiners.

- The question format of the Aptis exam is diverse, including multiple-choice, word matching, finding antonyms and synonyms, completing sentences with words, finding titles for paragraphs, etc., avoiding boredom and reducing fatigue throughout the exam.

- The content of the exam is friendly with familiar, easy-to-understand topics, highly applicable, and suitable for the learning and working environments of students and working individuals.

- For students at Bách Khoa University, to achieve the required standard, the Aptis exam will consist of the following 5 sections:

+ Grammar & Vocabulary: 25 Grammar questions, 25 Vocabulary questions (25 minutes)

+ Reading Skills: 4 passages (35 minutes)

+ Listening Skills: 4 sections (40 minutes)

+ Speaking Skills: 4 tasks (12 minutes)

+ Writing Skills: 4 tasks (50 minutes)

The test starts with common questions and then progresses to more advanced sections. Each section of the test will assess English proficiency levels from A1-C of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR).

How does the Aptis certificate correspond to the levels of the 6-level Foreign Language Proficiency Framework used in Vietnam?

On March 31, 2023, the Minister of Education and Training issued Decision 925/QD-BGDDT in 2023, which regulates the linkage of foreign language proficiency certificate examination organizations.

According to this decision, the Ministry of Education and Training recognizes the levels of the Aptis ESOL International Certificate (Aptis ESOL) as equivalent to the levels of the 6-level Foreign Language Proficiency Framework (FLPF) used in Vietnam.

Pursuant to Article 2 of Decision 925/QD-BGDDT in 2023, the equivalence levels of the Aptis certificate to the levels of the 6-level Foreign Language Proficiency Framework used in Vietnam are as follows:

The equivalence levels of the Aptis certificate to the levels of the 6-level Foreign Language Proficiency Framework used in Vietnam, according to Decision 925/QD-BGDDT in 2023, are effective from March 31, 2023.

What are the regulations on joint organization of foreign language certificate exams of foreign countries in Vietnam?

Article 2 of Circular 11/2022/TT-BGDDT regulates joint organization of foreign language certificate exams of foreign countries as follows:

- Certificates of foreign language proficiency of foreign countries are documents that confirm the results of foreign language proficiency exams issued to participants by agencies, organizations, or foreign language proficiency assessment agencies of foreign countries. The certificate of foreign language proficiency of a foreign country is not a certificate of the national education system.

- Joint organization of foreign language certificate exams of foreign countries is the cooperation between educational institutions, training institutions, or organizations legally established for operation in the field of education in Vietnam (hereinafter referred to as “exam organization facilities of Vietnam) and agencies, organizations, and facilities that assess the foreign language proficiency legally established for operation abroad (hereinafter referred to as “foreign facilities of foreign language proficiency assessment”) via written agreements or joint contracts to carry out one of the following works: exam registration, location use, exam organization, foreign language proficiency assessment, and issuance of certificates of foreign language proficiency of foreign countries in Vietnam.

- Subjects for joint organization, applications for approval, approval procedures, approval competency, deadline, extension, adjustment, suspension, termination of joint organization, and regulations on reports shall comply with regulations of the Government of Vietnam on foreign cooperation and investment in education.

- Schemes for the implementation of joint organization of foreign language certificate exams of foreign countries in Vietnam of the Exam Organization Facilities of Vietnam and Foreign Facilities of Foreign Language Proficiency Assessment (hereinafter referred to as “Joint Parties”) shall clearly describe the satisfactory levels of the criteria for quality assurance as prescribed in Article 3 of Circular 11/2022/TT-BGDDT.
