What is the origin of Vietnamese Doctor's Day?
On February 27, 1955, in a letter to the conference of healthcare officials, beloved President Ho Chi Minh sent heartfelt and precious teachings. The three important principles that Uncle Ho emphasized in the letter to the healthcare officials included:
(1) Firstly, it is necessary to be honest and united. Unity is our strength. With unity, we can overcome any difficulties and achieve many accomplishments. This unity should exist between both old and new officials, as well as between all individuals in the healthcare sector, from ministers, deputy ministers, doctors, pharmacists, to the supporting staff. Although our roles and positions may differ, everyone is an essential part of the healthcare sector and in serving the people.
(2) Love and care for the patients. Patients entrust their lives to you. The government entrusts you with the task of treating their illnesses and preserving the health of our fellow citizens. This is a very noble responsibility. Therefore, officials should love and care for the patients as if they were their own siblings, feeling their pain as their own. The saying, 'A good doctor is like an affectionate mother,' is absolutely correct.
(3) Building our own medical system. During the years of our country's enslavement, the medical field, like other sectors, was suppressed. Now that we are independent and free, officials should assist our people and the government in building a healthcare system that meets the needs of our people. Medicine should be based on the principles of national and popular science. Our ancestors had valuable experiences in using traditional Vietnamese medicine. To expand the scope of medicine, healthcare professionals should also focus on researching and integrating both Eastern and Western medicines."
=> Due to the profound significance of this letter, since 1955, our Party and state have decided to celebrate February 27 as a day to honor doctors and those working in the healthcare sector, known as "Vietnamese Doctors' Day."
