When is the 2024 Tet holiday according to the Gregorian and Lunar calendars?

Tet holiday is the largest festival among traditional festivals in Vietnam, marking the transition between the old and new year, a cycle of the heavens, earth, and all living things.

For Vietnamese people, Tet holiday is not only a time to transition between the old and new Lunar year but also contains many spiritual and cultural meanings. According to Eastern beliefs, this is a time when heaven and earth harmonize, and humans become closer to the deities.

In ancient times, Tet holiday was an occasion for farmers to express their reverence to deities such as the God of Land, the God of Rain, the God of Thunder, the God of Water, the God of the Sun, and pray for a year of favorable weather and bountiful harvests.

Moreover, it is also considered a time for “renewal,” a day for everyone to hope for a new year full of peace, prosperity, and convenience, leaving behind all the misfortunes of the old year. Therefore, during the Tet holiday, every household is busy cleaning, shopping, and decorating their house beautifully.

This year, the 2024 Tet holiday will fall on the following Gregorian and Lunar calendar dates:

- 29th Lunar Day of Tet: Thursday, February 8, 2024;

- 30th Lunar Day of Tet: Friday, February 9, 2024;

- Tet holiday (1st day of Lunar month): Saturday, February 10, 2024;

- 2nd Lunar Day of Tet: Sunday, February 11, 2024;

- 3rd Lunar Day of Tet: Monday, February 12, 2024;

- 4th Lunar Day of Tet: Tuesday, February 13, 2024;

- 5th Lunar Day of Tet: Wednesday, February 14, 2024.

What is the 2024 Tet holiday holiday schedule for officials, public employees, and employees in Vietnam?

- For officials and public employees:

On November 22, 2023, the Ministry of Labor - Invalids, and Social Affairs announced the Tet holiday Giap Thin and National Day holiday schedules for 2024 for officials, public employees, and employees.

According to Announcement 5015/TB-LDTBXH for 2023 of the Ministry of Labor - Invalids, and Social Affairs (MOLISA), officials and public employees are entitled to the 2024 Tet holiday holiday from Thursday, February 8, 2024 (29th Lunar Day of Quy Mao year) to Wednesday, February 14, 2024 (5th Lunar Day of Giap Thin year).

(The Tet holiday holiday includes 5 days of Tet holiday break and 2 compensatory days as prescribed in Clause 3, Article 111 of the 2019 Labor Code).

- For employees:

According to the provisions of Article 112 of the 2019 Labor Code, employees have a five-day paid leave for Tet holiday.

Moreover, Section 5 of Announcement 5015/TB-LDTBXH for 2023 specifies the 2024 Tet holiday holiday options for employees as follows:

- For the Tet holiday holiday: choose 1 day at the end of Quy Mao year and 4 days at the beginning of Giap Thin year, or 2 days at the end of Quy Mao year and 3 days at the beginning of Giap Thin year, or 3 days at the end of Quy Mao year and 2 days at the beginning of Giap Thin year.

- Notify employees of the 2024 Tet holiday holiday plan at least 30 days in advance.

- If a weekly rest day coincides with a lunar holiday prescribed in Clause 1, Article 112 of the 2019 Labor Code, the employee is entitled to compensatory leave on the next working day as stipulated in Clause 3, Article 111 of the 2019 Labor Code.

- Employers are encouraged to apply the same Tet holiday holiday schedule for employees as that for officials and public employees.

Vietnam: How is the salary paid for employees working on Tet holiday?

According to the provisions of Article 98 of the 2019 Labor Code on overtime pay, night work pay as follows:

Overtime pay, night work pay

1. Employees working overtime are paid according to wage rates or wages based on the work performed as follows:

a) On regular days, at least 150%;

b) On weekly rest days, at least 200%;

c) On holidays, Tet holiday, paid leave days, at least 300% not including the wage of the holiday, Tet holiday, paid leave day for employees receiving daily wages.

2. Employees working at night are paid at least an additional 30% of the wage calculated according to wage rates or actual wages for normal working days.

3. Employees working overtime at night are paid, in addition to the pay provided in Clauses 1 and 2 of this Article, at least an additional 20% of the wage calculated according to wage rates or actual wages for work performed during the daytime on normal working days, weekly rest days, or holidays, Tet holiday.

4. The Government of Vietnam details this Article.

If an employee works on Tet holiday days, they are entitled to a salary of at least 300%, in addition to daily wage pay for employees receiving daily wages.

In addition, if an employee works at night, they are paid at least an additional 30% of the wage for normal working days plus 20% of the wage for Tet holiday days.

Thus, if working on Tet holiday 2024, the salary is calculated as follows:

- Daytime work: At least 400% salary.

- Night work: At least 490% salary.
