What are the instructions for grading the academic results of lower and upper secondary school students in the 2023-2024 school year in Vietnam?

(1) For 6, 7, 8, 10 and 11 graders:

The grading of the academic results of 6, 7, 8, 10 and 11 graders in the first semester of the 2023-2024 school year will follow Clause 2, Article 9 of the Regulations issued with Circular 22/2021/TT-BGDDT.

For subjects assessed via both feedback and scores, DTBmhk is used to assess the academic results of a student in each semester while DTBmcn is used to assess the academic results of a student in the entire school year. Academic results of a student in each semester and in the entire school year shall be assessed by one of 4 categories: Excellent, Good, Qualified, Unqualified.

- Excellent:

+ All subjects assessed with feedback are placed in the Qualified category.

+ All subjects assessed by both feedback and scores have minimum scores of 6.5 for DTBmhk and DTBmcn with 6 subjects among which have minimum scores of 8.0 for DTBmhk and DTBmcn.

- Good:

+ All subjects assessed with feedback are placed in the Qualified category.

+ All subjects assessed by both feedback and scores have minimum scores of 5.0 for DTBmhk and DTBmcn with 6 subjects among which have minimum scores of 6.5 for DTBmhk and DTBmcn.

- Qualified:

+ Have no more than 1 subject assessed via feedback placed in the Unqualified category.

+ At least 6 subjects assessed by both feedback and scores have minimum scores of 5.0 for DTBmhk and DTBmcn with 0 subjects having scores lower than 3.4 for DTBmhk and DTBmcn.

- Unqualified: Remaining cases

*Note: If the assessment results of a semester and/or a school year is lowered by at least 2 categories from categories “Excellent” and “Good” due to assessment results of a single subject, the learning assessment results of the semester and/or school year shall be raised to the adjacent category.

(2) For 9 and 12 graders:

The grading of the academic results of 9 and 12 graders in the first semester of the 2023-2024 school year will follow Article 13 of the Regulation on assessment and grading of lower and upper secondary school students issued together with Circular 58/2011/TT-BGDDT is amended by Clause 6, Clause 7, Article 2 of Circular 26/2020/TT-BGDDT.

The grading of the academic results of 9 and 12 graders is specified as follows:

- Good grade:

+ Grade point average of the subjects from 8.0 points or more in which average point of one of 3 subjects: Mathematics, Literature, Foreign Language shall be from 8.0 or more; separately for students of specialized classes of specialized high schools, it is required to add condition of average point of the specialized subject from 8.0 or more;

+ There are no subjects that grade point average below 6.5;

+ The subjects evaluated by comments reached S.

- Rather good grade:

+ Grade point average of the subjects from 6.5 points or more in which average point of one of 3 subjects: Mathematics, Literature, Foreign Language shall be from 6.5 or more; separately for students of specialized classes of specialized high schools, it is required to add condition of average point of the specialized subject from 6.5 or more;

+ There are no subjects that grade point average is below 5.0;

+ The subjects evaluated by comments reached S.

- Medium grade:

+ Grade point average of the subjects from 5.0 points or more in which average point of one of 3 subjects: Mathematics, Literature, Foreign Language shall be from 5.0 or more; separately for students of specialized classes of specialized high schools, it is required to add the condition of average point of the specialized subject from 5.0 or more;

+ There are no subjects that grade point average is below 3.5;

+ The subjects evaluated by comments reached S.

- Weak grade:

Grade point average of the subjects from 3.5 points or more, there are no subjects that grade point average is below 2.0.

- Poor grade: The remaining cases.

However, if DTBhk or DTBcn reaches the level of the good grade and the rather good grade but as a result of only one subject that is lower than the level prescribed for that type, so academic results should be ranked lower shall be adjusted as follows:

+ If DTBhk or DTBcn reaches G but as a result of a certain subject that must be down Medium grade, it shall be adjusted into R.

+ If DTBhk or DTBcn reaches G but as a result of a certain subject that must be down Weak grade, it shall be adjusted into Medium grade.

+ If DTBhk or DTBcn reaches R but as a result of a certain subject that must be down W, it shall be adjusted into M.

+ If DTBhk or DTBcn reaches R but as a result of a certain subject that must be down P, it shall be adjusted into W.

What are the instructions for assessing the training results of lower and upper secondary school students in the 2023-2024 school year in Vietnam?

The instructions for assessing the training results of lower and upper secondary school students in the 2023-2024 school year in Vietnam are:

(1) For 6, 7, 8, 10 and 11 graders:

Under Point b, Clause 2, Article 8 of the Regulations promulgated together with Circular 22/2021/TT-BGDDT, the training results of students in each semester and in the entire school year shall be assessed by one of 4 categories: Excellent, Good, Qualified, Unqualified.

- Excellent: a student is placed in Excellent category in the 2nd semester and in Good category or higher in the 1st semester.

- Good: a student is placed in Good category in the 2nd semester and Qualified category or higher in the 1st semester; or Qualified category in the 2nd semester and Good category in the 1st semester; or Good category in the 2nd semester and Qualified category or Unqualified category in the 1st semester.

- Qualified: a student is placed in Qualified category in the 2nd semester and Good, Qualified, or Unqualified category in the 1st category; or Good category in the 2nd semester and Unqualified in the 1st semester.

- Unqualified: other cases.

(2) For 9 and 12 graders:

Under Article 4 of the Regulation issued together with Circular 58/2011/TT-BGDDT:

- Good grade:

+ Strictly observing the rules of the school; strictly observing the laws and regulations on order and social safety, traffic safety; actively involving in fighting against the negative action, prevention and combat of crime, social evils;

+ Always respecting teachers, and adults; love and help young children, having sense to build the collective, uniting, being trusted by friends;

+ Positively training morality, having a healthy, simple, unpretentious lifestyle; helping, caring for families;

+ Completing fully the task of learning, having sense of striving, honesty in life, in study;

+ Actively doing exercise, keeping hygiene and protecting environment;

+ Fully participating in educational activities, activities organized by the schools; actively participating in the activities of the Ho Chi Minh Young Pioneers, Youth Union of Ho Chi Minh Communist;

+ Having attitudes and appropriate behavior in training ethic, lifestyle according to contents of the citizen education subject.

- Rather good grade:

Implementing the provisions in clause 1 of this Article but having not reached the level of Good; incomplete but timely taking remedy after the teachers and friends comment.

- Medium grade:

There are some shortcomings in the implementation of the provisions in clause 1 of this Article but their levels are not serious; after being prompted, educated, they are absorbed, overcome but their progress is slow.

- Weak grade:

Not being obtained standard of medium grade or having one of the following defects:

+ Having mistakes of the serious nature or repeated in the implementation of the provisions in clause 1 of this Article, be educated, but not taking remedy;

+ Having impoliteness, hurting dignity, honor, or hurting the body of teachers, school staffs; hurting the honor and dignity of friend or others;

+ Having fraud in the study, examination, contest;

+ Fighting, disturbing order and security in schools or society; violating traffic safety; causing damage to public property or property of others.

In Vietnam, how many points must good lower and upper secondary school students in the 2023-2024 school year reach?

(1) For 6, 7, 8, 10 and 11 graders:

Under Article 15 of Circular 22/2021/TT-BGDDT on commendation:

Commendations
1. Principals shall award certificates of achievement for students
a) End-of-year commendation

- Award the title “Học sinh Giỏi” (Good student) for students who have obtained Excellent training and academic results for the entire school year.

Thus, the title “Học sinh Giỏi” (Good student) shall be considered for awarding lower and upper secondary school students who have obtained Excellent training results and good academic results for the entire school year.

Specifically, training results for the entire school year are assessed as Excellent when: (according to Article 8 of Circular 22/2021/TT-BGDDT)

- in each semester: Satisfy requirements for traits under formal education program excellently and display merits.

- in the entire school year: Excellent: a student is placed in Excellent category in the 2nd semester and the Good category or higher in the 1st semester.

In addition, academic results for the entire school year are graded as Good when they meet the following requirements: (according to Article 9 of Circular 22/2021/TT-BGDDT)

- All subjects assessed with feedback are placed in the Qualified category.

- All subjects assessed by both feedback and scores have minimum scores of 6.5 for DTBmhk and DTBmcn with 6 subjects among which have minimum scores of 8.0 for DTBmhk and DTBmcn.

Thus, to become good students in the 2023-2024 school year, 6, 7, 8, 10, and 11 graders must achieve 6.5 for DTBmhk and DTBmcn with 6 subjects among which have minimum scores of 8.0 for DTBmhk and DTBmcn and have the traning results assessed as Excellent for the entire school year.

(2) For 9 and 12 graders

According to Article 13 of Circular 58/2011/TT-BGDDT, standards for Good students are stipulated as follows:

- Grade point average of the subjects from 8.0 points or more in which average point of one of 3 subjects: Mathematics, Literature, Foreign Language shall be from 8.0 or more; separately for students of specialized classes of specialized high schools, it is required to add the condition of an average point of the specialized subject from 8.0 or more;

- There are no subjects that grade point average is below 6.5;

- The subjects evaluated by comments reached S.

Thus, for 9 and 12 graders in the 2023-2024 school year, they must have a Grade point average of the subjects from 8.0 points or more in which the average point of one of 3 subjects: Mathematics, Literature, Foreign Language shall be from 8.0 or more; and have no subjects that grade point average is below 6.5.
