What are the standards of associate professor title in Vietnam?

Pursuant to Article 4 of Decision 37/2018/QD-TTg on gstandards of associate professor title as follows:

Standards of professor or associate professor title
1. Avoid violating the teacher's ethics, not to be subject to disciplinary actions which may be a reprimand or more serious one or execution of criminal judgements; ensure authenticity and impartiality for training, scientific research and other activities.
2. Standards concerning the period of performance of duties of a lecturer at the undergraduate or higher level:
a) He/she must accumulate adequate time to perform lecturing duties at the undergraduate and higher level under the provisions of Clause 2 Article 5 of this Decision with respect to the professor title; Clauses 2 and 3 Article 6 of this Decision with respect to the associate professor title;
b) The period during which he/she holds the position as an educational expert at an overseas higher education establishment shall be assumed as the period of performance of lecturing duties at the undergraduate and higher level as provided by a diplomatic note or guest lecturer contract of that establishment, clearly stating his/her duties and lecturing timelength, or under the decision of the Minister of Education and Training that sends him/her abroad as an overseas educational expert;
c) He/she has been acquiring 10 successive years' experience in performing lecturing duties at the undergraduate and higher level till the submission deadline. With respect to such period of experience, if he/she has received internship or refresher programs for less than 12 months in the last 3 years, that 12-month timelength shall not be considered as an interval in the period of these last 3 years.
3. He/she must successfully finish assigned duties and fully meet lecture hour requirements in accordance with regulations adopted by the Minister of Education and Training, including at least a half of such lecture hours during which he/she is directly giving in-class lectures. Guest lecturers shall be required to attain at least 50% of the lecture hour norm as prescribed in this clause.
The head of a higher education establishment shall review and evaluate in writing the tasks assigned to lecturers, clearly stating the course's title, level of training, fostering, level of completion of teaching volume, dissertation guide, thesis, project or thesis; about the training results and research of the lecturers.
4. Proficiency in at least one foreign language for professional work and ability to communicate in English.
5. Have enough grades of scientific works converted into minimum grades as prescribed in Clause 9, Article 5 of this Decision, for professor titles and Clause 8, Article 6 of this Decision, for the position of associate professor.

Accordingly, in order to be appointed to the position of associate professor, an individual must first meet the above general criteria.

What are the criteria for appointing the associate professor title in Vietnam?

Criteria for appointment to the title of professor are recorded in Article 6 of Decision 37/2018/QD-TTg (amended by Clause 2, Article 1 of Decision 25/2020/QD-TTg) specifically as follows:

(1) Meet the general criteria of the professor title stipulated in Article 4 of this Decision.

(2) Having obtained a doctor's diploma for 03 years or more from the date of signing the decision granting the diploma to the deadline for submission of the application.

(3) At least 06 years, including the last three consecutive years of training and retraining from the university or higher level up to the deadline for submission of applications. Candidates who have not been qualified for 6 years and those who do not have enough teaching hours as stipulated in Clause 3, Article 4 of this Decision, must have at least twice the minimum scientific works' points contributed from articles. study or (i) patent; utility solution; Works of art, achievements in training or competition in physical training and sports, which have been awarded national or international prizes prescribed at Point b, Clause 8 of this Article..

(4) Announcement of scientific research results

- The applicant is the principal author who publishes at least two scientific papers or patents; utility solution; works of art, achievements in training and competitions in international physical training and sport. Candidates who do not have enough scientific works defined at this point must have at least 01 of the above-mentioned works and 01 book of training books published by one of the prestigious publishing houses in the world or with few 01 of the works mentioned above and 01 book of monographs published by a prestigious publishing house.

- From January 1, 2020: Candidate is the principal author who publishes at least 03 scientific papers or patents; utility solution; works of art, achievements in training and competitions in international physical training and sport. Candidates who do not have enough scientific works defined at this point must have at least 02 of the above-said works and 01 training book chapter published by one of the prestigious publishing houses in the world or with few 02 of the works mentioned above and 01 book of monographs published by a prestigious publishing house.

(5) Assume the prime responsibility for implementing at least two grassroots-level scientific and technological tasks or one ministerial-level scientific and technological task which has been accepted by the Ministry. Candidates failing to fulfill the scientific and technological tasks prescribed in this Clause shall be replaced by one scientific paper or one of the works: patent for invention; utility solution; works of art, achievements in training and competitions in international physical training and sport.

(6) Instruct at least 02 trainees who are awarded master's degree or master's or secondary level of at least 01 PhD student. For health sciences, guiding 01 trainees successfully defending a dissertation or resident doctor shall be counted as guiding one trainee to obtain a master's degree; Candidates who fail to provide sufficient guidance on traineeships or doctoral students specified in this Clause shall be replaced by the converted scientific works. Guiding 01 master's degree student to be replaced with one of the works: Scientific paper; patent; utility solution; books for training; works of art, achievements in training and competitions in international physical training and sport.

(7) Scientific articles specified in Clauses 4, 5 and 6 of this Article are scientific articles published in prestigious international scientific journals.

For majors in Military Science and Security Science related to state secrets in the field of national defense and security, scientific articles published in prestigious international scientific journals are replaced by alternative articles. The total score of the substitute articles for each scientific article published in a reputable international scientific journal must be 1.5 points or more and the total score of the substitute articles for the articles Scientific publications published in prestigious international scientific journals specified in Clauses 4, 5 and 6 of this Article shall not be included in the minimum total score of converted scientific works.

Scientific papers and alternative articles are counted from the time after the candidate successfully defends the doctoral thesis.

(8) Candidates must have at least 10.0 points for scientific research, including:

- At least 2.5 points will be taken in the last three years up to the deadline for submission;

- Candidates in the field of natural sciences, engineering and technology, health science must have at least 6.0 scientific work points calculated from scientific articles, patent or utilities. Candidates in the fields of social sciences and humanities, arts, physical training and sports must have at least 4.0 scientific research points calculated from scientific papers or utility solutions; art works, training achievements, sports competitions and national and international awards.

Thus, in order to be appointed to the position of associate professor, in addition to the general criteria, an individual needs to meet the above criteria.
