What should I do after losing my passport in Vietnam?

At Point b, Clause 2, Article 28 of the Vietnam Law on Exit and Entry of Vietnamese citizens 2019 stipulates as follows:

Article 28. Cancellation of valid and lost passports

2. Cancellation of regular passports is prescribed as follows:
a) Within 48 hours from the moment on which regular passports are found to be lost, original holders of such passports shall submit notice on loss of passports in person or in written form to immigration authorities of choice, the nearest police departments or entities supervising entry and exit at border checkpoints or Vietnam representative offices located overseas of choice. In case of force majeure, deadline for submission or sending of notice of loss may be longer but reasons thereof must be specified in such documents;
b) Within 1 working day from the date on which notice on loss of regular passports, accepting agencies are responsible for informing immigration authorities of Ministry of Public Security and persons submitting the notice using defined templates. Within 1 working day from the date on which the notice is received, immigration authorities of Ministry of Public Security shall cancel the passports.

Thus, according to the above provisions, immediately after discovering that the ordinary passport is lost, the person who has lost the passport directly submits or sends the loss notice to the competent authority within 48 hours from the discovery.

Includes the following organs:

- Immigration authority where favorable;

- The nearest police agency;

- Immigration control unit at the border gate;

- Vietnamese representative offices abroad in favorable places.

What are the steps to report the loss of a common passport in Vietnam?

Pursuant to the contents of Subsection 1, Section I, Part II, the list of procedures issued together with Decision 3191/QD-BCA in 2022 of the Minister of Public Security.

The procedure for reporting the loss of an ordinary passport includes the following steps:

Step 1: Prepare documents

Vietnamese citizens who have lost their ordinary passports in the country prepare dossiers to report the loss of ordinary passports in accordance with the Vietnam Law.

Step 2: Apply

- Vietnamese citizens who have lost their ordinary passports in the country shall report the loss of their ordinary passports through the National Public Service Portal, the Public Service Portal of the Ministry of Public Security, through the public postal service or at one of the two offices of the Immigration Department - Ministry of Public Security:

+ No. 44-46 Tran Phu Street, Ba Dinh District, Hanoi City.

+ No. 333-335-337 Nguyen Trai Street, District 1, Ho Chi Minh City.

Or at immigration control units under the Immigration Department, Ministry of Public Security.

When applying, you must present a valid identity card or citizen identity card for inspection and comparison.

- Time to receive applications: From 2nd to 7th morning every week (except Tet, public holidays).

- The officer receiving the dossier checks the legality and content of the dossier:

+ If the dossier is complete and valid, it will be accepted.

+ If the dossier is incomplete and valid, guide the person reporting the loss of the passport to complete the dossier as prescribed.

Step 3: Get results

- In case of direct submission and request to receive results via postal services, follow the instructions of the postal service provider.

- In case of sending a dossier via the postal service, the Immigration Department shall send a notice of the settlement of the passport loss report via the postal service according to the information in the sender's file.

- Time to return results: From 2nd to 6th every week (except Tet, public holidays).
